performance filters

been havin a sneaky peek on the web at k&n filters. was wondering if any 1 has them?
first wanted to stick an induction kit on but i am a little concerned bout the engine bay temps so i thought just stick the panel filter in......
would this increase power ( if it did i know it wouldnt be much) and would fuel economy increase??
any thoughts appreciated thnxs

ive got a K&N filter that i bought off ebay, it was lovely and shiny when i got it... six months on its rusty but still does the job, nice throaty aggressive sound, and a not really noticeable increase in HP. worth it for the sound to be honest, makes my grumbly diesel sound a bit more sporty

ITG filters are better than K&N, according to most reviews - but not due to power increase - simply due to better airflow, and with no loss in filtration over the standard panel filter.

Based on reading other people's accounts, I bought an ITG panel filter, and found it to give me precisely sod-all performance increase. I noticed no difference to the sound of my 1.8 16v petrol engine either.

If you want better airflow and therefore more power, a turbocharger or supercharger are the most effective ways of doing this - but for the cost of it, it's just not worth doing to your 406. Other than that, a good enclosed induction kit (i.e. one where the cone filter is NOT sucking in hot air from the engine bay) is the only other thing you might do that may give some (low) performance increase.

Freer flowing air in the standard air filter box = less filtration = more crud getting into your engine = increased risk of BOOM!

As far as I'm concerned the only way to upgrade your air supply filter without harming your engine in the long run is to fit a bigger air filter, or modify the air filter box to accept a cone filter, and rig up an air scoop

Think about factory built high performance (300+bhp) cars. They don't use these stupid K&N filters or induction kits - they just have huge filters and air scoops.

on my 2.2 sri, i simply removed the resonator on the front of the air box. reason for this was cos i thought there would be more air being sucked into the inlet, but would all still go through the same stock filter.

end result is much more induction roar and maybe be slightly better throttle response. i love the way it sounds in 3rd at about 4500 rpm!

This reduction in weight will probably give the same sort of gains as just replacing the stock filter as the bhp/tonne will be increased. ;)

had pretty much decided not to bother having read peoples replies then teamster posted that and that hammered the final nail into that performance filter coffin :cheesy:thanks to all for the info
