"Engine Management System Faulty" & car gone into Safe Mode?

Hi all,

I bought a 2004 407 hdi 1.6 last week. It has 117,000 miles on it.

A day after I bought the car, a message appeared saying "Depollution system Failure". I didn't know what to do so I brought it to my mechanic who gave the car a service. He also plugged it into the diagnostics machine but no problems came up.

He recommended that I purchase a new battery, so I did.

Tonight when driving the car, a message appeared saying "Engine Management System Faulty". The car also appears to be in Safe Mode - I cannot exceed 3,000rpm.

What is wrong with my car? Have I bought a banger? I am getting very worried now as I don't have the money to be spending on Main Dealer prices.

PLEASE HELP.

Hello Will & Welcome 8)

As Teamy says, your best bet is probably the 407 forum - none of us has direct experience of your engine AKAIK. On 406's the catch-all error message is 'ANTIPOLLUTION FAULT', which is misleading because in reality it means any engine management fault. There are some potentially serious / expensive problems you car could be suffering, but it may also be as simple as a bad connection or loose vacuum pipe.

Don't know what form of diagnostic machine your mechanic has, but not all are capable of giving as much info as the dealer, (Lexia / PP2000), setup. Maybe a 2nd opinion would help?
