Exhaust Rattle

Hi everyone, new to the forum and new to 406's too.

I own an R reg 1.9td lx. It's pretty high mileage, 234000 to be precise, it goes well. Fuel economy pretty good as well.

A couple of niggles.

1. It sounds like the exhaust is lose, I put the car on the ramps and had a prod with a stick (I'm very technical :cheesy: ) and the rattle stops, as it does when the engine is under load.
is this manifold/heatshield related? I also noticed between the manifold and the metal "u" shaped mount at the rear of the exhaust there is no other mounting point, is this usual?

2. when its cold and I turn the wheel hard it squeals, not unlike a fan belt squeal , when the car is warm the squeal goes away.

Thanks in advance :)

Welcome in seadog! :)

1. Could be one of the rubbers has gone or the flexible connector is knackered. Is it blowing?
2. Auxilliary belt loose, unless PAS pump is getting tired.

Thanks for the welcome teamster. No blow from the exhaust, I can't actually see any rubbers :? Sorry, I have only had the car a few weeks, so apologies for the silly questions. Is the flexible hose from the manifold to the first box?

No worries, we're here to help each other out! :)

It's not a flexible hose as such; where the pipe joins the manifold there is a clamp which pushes over the flange with a pair of bolts which have springs on them. These give up over time and cause free play (and blowing more often than not!). You can get a replacement kit from Eurocarparts for a tenner or put a load of washers behing the bolt heads to get more tension on the springs.
Right pig to get to mind you but do-able on axle stands.
