Cooling system

Post by Archangel »

As above , I am thinking about flushing out the cooling system before winter months.

Its a 1.9TD 1997.

Any useful info/methods /hints or way of doing this I would really like to hear . Last vehicle I did this to had cap on the radiator and no expansion tank so I guess this will be a little different to sort out .
Replacement !

If there's a drain plug at the bottom of the radiator, use it, else just remove the bottom hose. If the bottom hose if half way up you may want to consider removing both then pulling the radiator out (just 2 clips) to empty it

Fill the system with the expansion tank side of the car higher than the other side. A kerb is sufficient for this, or use a jack

When the coolant temperature reaches about 85c the thermostat will open letting water into the radiator and rapidly dropping the water level in the expansion tank. Keep it filled throughout this. Bleed AFTER it happens.

Don't worry about over-filling - that's a pressure cap on the expansion tank, so it'll just spit out any excess
