Don't think this is legal but...

1=8mm
2=6mm
While you're shopping online you should go ahead there and order a Haynes

Re: 1.8 head gasket and cam belt help urgent
your a star , thanks , i have my son every saturday and do around 200 mile journey , i was literaly comming off motorway within half a mile of house when temprature rocketed and the dreaded stop light came on , good of motorway police to tow me home as i had 2 yo son in car .
last week or so the car has been struggling to start and when it did fire up it was running rough for few seconds , it has been loosing water with no obviouse leaks and i had suspected head gasket on way out .
ive just had it running after turning over loads and struggling to fire up and the cooling system is pressurising way to fast and car cut out again after about 3 minutes , i had to leave it running to charge battery as hazard lights killed it off sat on side of motorway for over an hour with em on , it runs sweet and revs fine for few minutes then just dies .
i come to the conclusion when the coolant system pressurises it is forcing water into one of the cylinders and drowning plug , all will be revealed in morning as i got no option but to strip it wish i had somewhere under cover to work as ide be out there now stripping it down , but hey what a way to spend a sunday stripping head off the car and possibly in the rain lol .

good luck with it.
Re: 1.8 head gasket and cam belt help urgent
Yes, good luck!!
Be careful with the tensioner, there are 2 types, one like the HDi with a normal roller that you tension by pushing the roller against the belt and test by trying to turn the tensioner pulley, if you can turn it with resistance, it is correct, if it turns easy, it's too slack and if you can't turn it, it's too tight....the other type has pointers and slots that need to line up.
If you aren't sure about setting the timing up, find TDC by taking out number 1 plug then mark the position of all of the pulleys before you strip it, also when you take the cam cover off, get a sharp blade and scratch a mark on each camshaft to ensure you put them back as they came off.
If you need any tightening data just ask.
All the best.

Re: 1.8 head gasket and cam belt help urgent
i dont have a torque wrench unfortunatly , im wrecking my brain trying to think where i can borrow one , i know a mechanic 2 junctions down motorway that i might be able to borrow one off on monday , or other option is get cheap one from motor factors someone has suggested i use close by as they deliver , i have a mate who has one i can borrow but he is 20 mile away and wont bring it up to me , one way or another ill get one so ide be greatfull if you could post head bolt settings and any other bolts that need specific torque settings , thanks all .alan.

Re: 1.8 head gasket and cam belt help urgent
You can tighten the head without a torque wrench, but you should really fit new head bolts, however, the maximum bolt length is 160mm.
Stage 1) Tighten to 60nm, this about how tight it would be using a normal ratchet and sensible tight....tight as you can get the bolt using a ratchet without forcing it.
Stage 2)Slacked each bolt off individually (one at a time) 360 Degrees.
Stage 3)Tighten 20nm + 100 degrees, eg, tighten each bolt a little bit with a ratchet then 100 degrees.
Stage 4)Tighten 100 degrees.
stage 5 Tighten 100 degrees.
All other bolts tighten with common sense.
Wow! there's 18 bolts!!!
Looking from the front of the engine....there are 4 rows of bolts....15 and 17 furthest left, 16 and 18 furthest right.
Top row...from the left...11, 3, 6, 14.
Second row... 17, 9, 1, 8, 16.
Third row.... 15, 7, 2, 10, 18.
Fourth row...... 13, 5, 4, 12.
I hope you understand this....These settings are for 16 valve petrol engine.
