I've just bought a 2001 406 hdi 110 the clutch biteing point is close to the floor , I thought this could be signs of clutch probs!, but after reading some of the topics on this site , am I right in understanding that a different release mechanism is used on some 406's push intead of pull ???????? is their anyway to change the mechanism ?. the first times I drove the car I kept stalling , the clutch is working ok , just seems an ass about face system!. my old 200w 406 like you would expect near the top of the pedal stroke , is their any logical reason for the change or just a not to clever idea from peugeot????????

I think you should probably be happy that if the biting point is near the floor, the clutch is probably fairly new and the biting point will get higher as the clutch wears in.

As jasper says that's a good thing, besides you'll get used to it in no time

Possibly... How close to the floor are we talking? Pedal to the carpet, or just not as high as you were expecting? Mine with a brand new clutch bites about smack bang in the middle (although it's very progressive, to occupies about 1/3 the complete travel). With a worn clutch, the bite will be at the top of travel

That's right, the hydraulic clutches push a pivoted fork, which pulls the release bearing. I've not had a 406 with cable clutch so I don't know what they do...

It's just different... I own a 406 V6 and a Mk.4 Golf TDI, both with hydraulic clutches, and switching between them is always "interesting" for the first 5 minutes. The 406 has a very light, very progressive clutch whereas the Golf has a bloody strong spring, a hell of a kick back at bite point and is almost binary in operation.

mine was worn , bite was at top. new fitted, bite at top. infact i think its a charecteristic of the hydraulic clutch. i would check if it needs bleeding but as long as it doesnt slip i wouldnt worry.

The bite will be at the bottom with the pull type arrangement.Shouldn't take long to bed in though.
These are hydraulic also.
