It's right. 406s have a nice high interval. In fact that particular engine (XU10J2TE) can probably go with diesel intervals as it revs lower than the oil burners
I ran mine about 130k past its first and only belt change before scrapping the car for another 406 due to needing too much expensive stuff (4 tyres, gaiters, brakes, cambelt...). Engine was still sweet in that thing *sob*.

wouldn't the age of the belt be a factor? i thought belts can perish if they aren't doin many miles so its changed at miles/ years whichever is sooner
i dont know the interval on my 1.8 but it was changed at 60k and i plan on having it done at 100k which will be approx 4/5 years of driving (8/10k p.a) unless someone comes on and says don't talk bollox

found this today on ukcars review below is just a little excert:
The level of build quality is excellent but there have been some stories of problems with the four-cylinder petrol engines. Stalling, especially in the 2.0-litre versions, is by no means uncommon, so try to ensure you start the engine from cold on your test drive. Theres also the known weakness of this engine family of engines the timing belt.
Make sure its been changed every 30,000 miles or it may snap without warning, seizing the engine you have been warned. It costs about £100 to replace much cheaper than a new engine.

Is it not normally 80,000 miles or 8 years?
If you're able to change it yourself it'll not cost you £100, but if you don't have the tools/skills/confidence to do it yourself it'll cost a fair bit more in garage fees. I'm going to get my coupe's belt and water pump changed pretty much as soon as I get her (Saturday, hopefully)

The accuracy on the price of parts is just as ridiculous as their 30,000 mile timing belt replacement interval....£250 for a radiator?
£322 for an alternator? I bought one last week for 200 quid less!
According to my timing belt book, 80,000 is the correct interval (after 1998), 72,00 before, under adverse conditions, 48,000 and 54,000 respectively.

got the tools just not the confidence/patience/time. few years before i need it doin too, and will do the water pump next time( didnt cross my mind when i had the belt done 9 mnths ago ,just needed a car pronto) is there a recommended milage for changing the water pump? or just done with the belt as a matter of course?
you ever change yours highlander on the saloon? haynes makes it sound so easy they have it at the same difficulty level as changing the thermostat!
i am fortunate to be able to get it in at one man band mechanics so dont have to pay ott labour rates.
the prices for the spares ARE extortinate

probably dealer prices?? 400 quid for an exhaust!! my car aint worth 400 quid

No, never changed it on the saloon (I don't have the tools, the confidence, a garage, or a nice day

) though if I were keeping her, it would have been my next big bit of maintenance. I've got it budgeted for the coupe though. With only 3,000-ish 2.2l 406 coupes ever built, I would be a little upset with myself if I let the engine die due to a belt snapping.
The water pump should be replaced as part of the timing belt change as you need to remove the timing belt in order to take it off - for all the cost of a brand new water pump, it's a false economy leaving it on there too long, given how bad it would be for your engine if it died...

ive got a 406 2.0 turbo petrol and the timing belt kit was £38.27(gates) and the water pump was £23.49 and £10.00 for anti-freeze so a grand total of £71.76 and i done it my self, but i must add i was a mechanic untill 4 years ago at peugeot, but you dont need any special tools.
