2l hdi 110hp holding back

the previous owner of my 406 was in the car with me today , and he said it seemed the car was holding back its power alittle .


we cleaned off the intercooler witch was swamped with dirt , and also changed the airfilter . but its still the same.

any ideas what it could be?

some of my ideas are a faulty sensor in turbo , or maybe the air mass meter



any advice is welcom

Hope I'm not highjacking your thread 406BE but...

My 2.0l 110 HDi has a similar problem in that sometimes the engine won't pull and other times it will. As an example driving home from work last night (Oxon to Lancs) I would find that the car would top out at 65mph and lose speed going up kind of incline above dead flat despite having the accelerator depressed resulting in having to drop down a gear. Sometimes this can be "cured" by backing off on the accelerator and gently depressing it, not always mind.

Other times the engine will pull strongly way past 90 (off the highway honest officer).

Its been like this for some time now but it's getting progressively worse. it used to be that it was occasional sluggishness it's getting towards the point where it is now in that state more than it is in the normal state.

I had the Timing belt and tensioner changed last year, it's recently been serviced and because I though the MAF was the problem I bought a brand new one last month with no improvement.

Would the throttle position sensor going faulty have something to do with this, or is it likely to be something drastic like the fuel system?

jump aboard :D same prob , mine is an automatci tho, but like u say , it seems to falt out ,but then afterwards accelerate up again
i think we will both benefit of this thread ;)

this may sound simple but check fuel filter. a blocked filter will act like a rev limiter.

ok cheers! hadent thought of that! the car is nearly up for a large service anyway

anyone got a guide on how too change the filter?
Ithink mine needs a change as the car feels a bit lumpy on idle feels like a petrol car with a plug or lead down :|

couid a dirty filter cause the car to be lumpy on idle,?

the fuel filter, i havent any pics but i changed it no trouble. Open the bonnet, and in front of the engine but behind the radiator there should be a circular thing. Youll need the engine cover off to see it, but its circular, with 2 wires coming into each side, unclip the wires, and make sure you know which way they go, then loosen the circular thing, lift it up and you should see your fuel filter, thats the hard part, putting it in should be straightforward but i forget how i did it.

thanks for the reply much apreciated: iwill have a bash at it once the weather gets a bit warmer ,

is the system as self bleed on the Hdis or do ihave to fill the filter with deisel ?

warm your hands up and then do it, it doesnt take that long. I opened it up, the filter was submerged in diesel, and the new one just got put back in, no taking any diesel out required, so i didnt have any diesel to bleed. This was on my 2002 hdi

Couple of things spring to mind, the throttle position sensor and the air flow meter. If you can get hold of a couple of tested replacements it might be worth a go. If not a decent diagnostic check to look at fuel pressure and sensor values etc......
