Conversion from petrol to diesel.

Any body know if it would be possible to change the engine in my 406 from the 2.0 turbo to a 1.9TD?

Now before anybody ask's why I'm not doing this for economy reasons's, I want the engine for a 205   and personally I think its a shame to scrap a perfectly good 406, especially as its an executive with all the leather etc.

I reckon an N/A petrol would probably drop in too and it'd be a matter of just plug and play no? But if I was going doing it at least the diesel would cost a bit less as I do a fair bit of mileage. The car is 1996 so the HDi would never have been in one anyway and the TD shouldn't need that much to get it to run but I'd be afraid that the clocks, A/C etc. might not work properly with it.

Anyone any idea's or opinions?

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing  but with a 306 D turbo, i need the 406 for carting the family around but the 2.0 turbo is heavy on fuel.
I guess a trip to the scrap yard to get the 406 diesel fuel tank, lines and clocks would be a start.

Do you reckon it's that straight forward then? Be great if it was.

Nothing is straight forward lol, would be a lot easier if you had a running diesel car to liberate everything from, ive done diesel to petrol before with no trouble. the 2.0 turbo is fairly pokey but in a heavy estate car its not much fun and the fuel economy is dire. but in something small and light i bet its a real hoot. A fair few have done that conversion into 205s and 306s on the respective forums and makes for interesting reading. Get stuck into it thats what i say

Why not just buy a diesel estate and use it?

He only wants the engine from the 406, and doesn't want to scrap an otherwise perfectly-serviceable 406 afterwards.

It might be quite a lot of work and a fair bit of expense involved, depending on where and from what model of car the donor diesel engine comes from.

Why not take the opportunity to make 2 interesting cars out of it? You're already looking at creating a 2.0 turbo 205 so rather than just making a TD 406 (of which there are plenty already) how about whacking in a GTi-6 engine & box? Or if it's the economy you want, try the 2.5 or 2.2 from one of the Peugeot vans? Sounds like you're up for a challenge from the 205 plan.

Diesels have beefed up front suspension to take the wheight of the big engine and much more sound proofing to stop the clatter getting in. The old merc estate i used to have said on the boot 230te so you would expect a petrol, but it had been converted to a diesel by my cousin it had the 2.5 straight 5, and it really did work quite well, he got 10 years trouble free driving and i mean absolutle trouble free, and i rallied it round the farm for a while until my lack of experience with rwd caught me out. But the only thing odd about it was the glow plugs had to be manually heated with a button, everything else was ok, he had to adjust the front suspension but the rest was the old petrol car parts even the fuel tank and slushbox were from the petrol.
Good luck on the 205, i love them cars, 10 times better than the Golf Gti.

Yep - would be a tricky job.

Remember, the loom would be susbtantially different. If you have lots of time, money and patience - I say go for it, but another 2.0T engine would be the best bet for now :)

Or scrap a Citroen - we encourage that on the forum :cheesy:

The 2.1 is a heavy lump but takes the front springs from a V6, so I guess they must be a similar weight. The 1.9 isn't as heavy, might even use the same springs (just had a squint, uses same springs as 1.8 and 2.0, so possibly the turbo springs would be ok, perhaps they're just lower and/or harder) Not so much of an issue on a D8 (I think the fuel tank might be the same but they changed a few times).

You'd need an engineer's report to change the log book, and feck knows what else, or you'd have to pay greyhound insurance on a snail.

Insurance is the bugger, my cousin eventually couldnt insure the big merc, the 2.5 was only available as a turbo when in the w124 but he put in a non turbo from a 190e, the insurance on it cost more than the turbo, or the 2.3 petrol, so the car drove about for 10 years still registered as the 230 petrol.

Reminded me about my Mum's boss's little toy. Been sat at his work for months now, but he's got a 1989 SEC coupe that's been diesel converted using either a 3.5 or 3.0 Turbo Diesel engine. Reckon it'd be a brilliant little plaything if he could be bothered with it.
