got a 1997 2.1 12v td pug 406, and its drinking diesel like its going out of fashion, been getting around 50 miles to the £10, but seems to be worse over last few days (will know for sure when the tanks getting empty)

had a chap last night come round to plug it in to see if there are any faults logged in the ecu, but his lappy with Peugeot planet wouldn't speak to my car, which he reckoned was VERY unusual, but he did mention that he reckoned the timing belt may have skipped a tooth on the crank, but the belt was done 20k ago, and when i took him out in the car and he felt how smoothly it starts / idles / drives, he quickly went off the idea (altho i am gonna stick the locking tools in just to double check later on)

ordered a fuel filter as well to try, should be here this afternoon, but again, it had a new one in the last 6 months, so while certainly needing done, shouldn't exactly be in a dire state, but again, will give it a service just in case.

anybody else got any other ideas, i know its an old car, but it really does drive VERY well, but the fuel consumption is just killing it for me.

Any unusual smoke? Try some injector cleaner? Is the water temperture normal / heating up as quickly as usual?

If you can't get PP2000 to talk to it, check all the fuses in the engine fusebox, one of them supplies the diagnostic socket, (or at least it does on D9's).

yeah, checked the fuses while he was there, none blown.

interesting thing that i didn't click onto till i came back to work after lunch, but now my stereo doesn't turn off when i turn off the ignition

i have a 98 2.1 as well and a while back i had a non starting fault on mine and mr aa man pluged his laptop in and my car wouldnt talk to it either.sorry cant help with your other proplem.

I get about 50 miles to a tenner form the petrol turbo in mine, i thought that was bad. does it black smoke on boost? Wonder if its been played with. My old one had some tweaks and used to leave a james bond style cloud when i booted it

are your injector leak off pipes ok? you don't have a puddle of diesel under the car?

fuel pipes both incomming and return, i snagged it on a 309 when rallying in the fields just pished out diesel and only when it was running, replaced with some garden hose. Get a compression test done check the headgasket isnt gone that puts a big dent in fuel economy.

Tyres pressures? Binding brakes? How clean's the inlet from all the gunk through the EGR?

smokes badly on cold start for about 2 seconds, and is then fine. need to leave it for at least 3 or 4 hours before it does it again, if i leave for an hour and start up, its fine, only a SLIGHT blue smoke on boost, and even at that, not all the time, only when i'm really pushing it.

tyre pressures are fine, brakes are brand new all round and do not bind (i have checked) will check out the egr pipe (that the bendy one over the rocker cover? )

I have some injectors coming, when I get them reconditioned and fitted I'll let you know if they make a difference.
