do you mean starter motor?
Whats the year of the car, engine size, fuel?

2.0 petrol estate (it's in his sig), it's also a D8.
Stepper motor aka idle control valve/bypass valve. There's a resynchronisation procedure?

Daft question Rob but have you checked all the connections to make sure that you haven't knocked one off?
Is the engine trying to catch or just turning over?
May be worth disconnecting the battery for 5 mins just in case the immobiliser has its knickers in a twist.
