driving home from work engine management light came on followed by anti pollution messaage and went in to limp home mode there also seems to be no turbo
can anyone shed any light on this

Oh crap 
I think you should get the codes read (unless anyone else has any ideas), the anti-pollution message is pretty general, it sticks that up for the majority of problems but it's not necessarily anything to do with the cat or whatever. Cutting the turbo is part of limp home mode btw.
