Air Filter confusion

Post by RichardFryer »

Replaced my air filter on my 2002 HDI 110 estate with a Fram CA5111.
The car had a Fram CA5715 (which has the grey foam base attached to it) fitted when I brought the car so I am wondering what difference the foam base makes

On further investigation the Fram on line catalogue states in CA5111 for Peugot HDIs and CA5715 (with the foam base) for citroen HDIs. Other online sellers of Fram filters say Peugot HDIs have a CA5715 (with the foam base) and for citroen HDIs
either a CA5715 or a CA5111
I am puzzled as to which is correct and what difference having or not having the grey foam base makes.

Richard I agree with Gary on this one, I also tore the foam base off my filter, as long as no crap can get through but air flow is as good as possible don't worry about it.

The foam bit is designed as a kinda pre-filter to preserve (and extend) the life of the main filter.

Its all to do with stretching service intervals to make car servicing costs look competitive. It's a bit like having oil changes every 20,000 miles or 2 years. The car buying public would baulk at having to have the car serviced every 10,000 miles so instead they change things like having fully synthetic oil, masssive filters etc...... doesn't make it right though in my book.

Got the foam bit on mine - if I can get enough air through it, you shouldn't have a problem. 8)

Just fitted a K&N filter to mine, always used them in the past as they are proven to both filter and flow.

Big plus point is that they last forever & don't block up (clean at 50'000 if I remember correctly).

At £33 it's quite a few cheap air filters, but having seen what I took out of the air filter box I think it's a wise move. Not sure if it was a filter or some kind of mattress? :)

I have a k&N in the disco, came already fitted, its a clean (ie brush off crap)every service job and clean with expensive solvents and re oil every 12500 miles or annually whichever is sooner, if you leave your K&N for 50'000 it will be clogged up worse than any paper filter could be, that oil is deliberately sticky stuff!

they come with a "lifetime guarantee" but its only the life of the car
