1999 2.0L HDi110, is it a D8 or a D9?

Post by millard »

Hi, as per the title of the thread please?
I'm replacing my duff alternator and decided that as I've got so much stuff removed/loosened off from the engine bay and I'm gonna be up to me elbows in grease on and off for a few days that I might as well go the whole hog and do the cambelt & tensioner, water pump & aux belt whilst I'm at it.
I got the car a coupla weeks back back, it's done 150k miles and I can see no mention in it's service history (up to 2008, 120k miles) of a cambelt change. I was gonna put it off untill the warmer weather arrives in spring but with the alternator going on strike my hand has been forced, probably just as well really.
So I got a CD workshop manual off ebay and I've been reading up on that, also Eviltwin's excellent write up on how he did his (thanks for that ET). I can't figure out which model mine is though - D8 or D9?
Also I decided that I don't really like digital manuals, I prefer the old fashioned Haynes analogue type.
I know Haynes have their shortcomings, I've lost count of the number of them I've bought over the years, but I do like to have a book to hand in the engine bay as opposed to having to come indoors in a greasy state, midjob, and incurring the wrath of "You Know Who" in order to consult the pictures on the screen.
I've been having a look on ebay and Amazon but just about all of the manuals on sale preclude the direct injection models, why is that?
Any ideas where to get one please?
anyone have used one they wanna sell? Don't mind greay thumb prints, so long as it's readable.
Thanks in advance.

99 HDI can be both a D8 and a D9

The HDi engine came in as of Oct 98, but wasn't officially launched until March 99 with the facelifted model - so they could class it as a new engine for the line up, but basically, had already been out there "maybe" "on test" with the consumer to highlight any problems not shown in normal development.

Does the front end look like this?

If yes, it's a D8

If it's got the honeycomb grill it's a D9
ALthough there is a transition period where cars have a mix of parts

My 1999 S reg was first reg'ed in Feb 99, and has the 1.9 TD engine. I'm pretty sure HDi's are D9.
There was D8.5 sure it was a D9 body with D8 engine not the other way round.

Plod (on this forum) has a D8 car with an HDi engine

This is a bit of an oddity, but during 1999, when the D8 to D9 changeover happened, all sorts of weird and wonderful half-and-half beasts were created

There's a T-reg car in Aberdeen (I've seen it twice, briefly) with a D9 front end and a D8 boot & light cluster.

My old V-Reg D9 saloon is an early pure D9 (November 1999).

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

As I said in my post above, the 110 HDi first appeared in cars built in October 1998
and again, as said, Peugeot didn't make a song and dance about it, and introduced it "officially" for the launch of the D9
So thus, there are 6 months of production of D8's and progressing into D8.5's with cars fitted with the 110 HDi

Leads to a little confusion on some people's part in that they think people have retro fitted the HDi engine as "officially" it was a new engine for the D9
