Was able to get the car on the ramp at the DIY car maintenance course I'm doing down the tech.

The car has been juddery coming off the accelerator and ate a flexi a few months ago.

The lower engine mount looks like this.

I thought the rubber bush would be in pieces?

Also, there appears to be a bit of play front and back, but not up and down. Is the bush on the right way? (ie. N-S instead of E-W?)

It's going to a garage to sort this in the new year once xmas spending season is finally over (bah humbug and despite knowing the risks of eggsauce flexi, intercooler pipes etc.)

for an engine mount it looks quite good, after the talk of engine mounts, i looked at mine when the car was turned on and revved it doesnt seem to move.

Didn't look too bad, and not a lot of movement back and forth when pushing the top of the engine.

Would a bottom pulley display the same symptoms?

Either way, it's going into a garage come January.

Mine was like that looked ok but when i put a bar behind it there was a lot of play and a slight tear but when i replaced it it stopped though theyre a bitch to do if you trying to do it without driveshaft removal

whats the symptons of a bad engine mount, my engine doesnt lurch at all when the cars revved, of course its no platform to set a cup on but its not comical either.

No mine didnt lurch either it was when starting or turning the engine off it would wobble a lot but when running idling and revving it was smooth you can usually tell by pulling the bottom of the engine or moving it with a bar and you will be able to see any tears or damage to it

still fine then on this engine.

Engine mounts can be past it even when looking fine.

The first thing I'd suggest would be to replace the pear-shaped top mount. £20 or thereabouts and can be changed in 15 mins, unlike the bottom mount which is a ballache of a job. The top mount is under-specced for the torquier models, and is pretty much considered a consumable with V6s

Wobbling when starting and stopping is normal.

A cambelt sorted out my judder -- old one must have got a bit slack (it had done 85k over 5 years).

Not so much starting, but when I take the foot off the accelerator there is a bit of a jerk / lurch.

Also, sometimes for example 40mph in 5th gear, it is very jerky.

Hi everyone. I have a 2004 406hdi90 and have a juddery engine when on tick over and pulling away. I want to change all the engine mounts for a piece of mind. Can anyone tell me how many mounts there are? I seem to think there are only 2 from my searching on ebay. Thanls in advance.

There's a 3rd one under the gearbox, so 3 in total. You need to remove the driveshaft to replace the bottom rear mount as someone (local garage) to press the old mount out and the new one in. The others are much easier to do though

You can remove lower mount in situ without driveshaft removal but its very difficult it may be worth looking at the powerflex mounts that are made for the 306 as I read they fit the 307 so I'm guessing should fit the 406

Looking at the diagrams I think there are *technically* 4, the belt end one has not one but two lumps of rubber - have a squint:

Although it's this last one (#24 in the diagram) that's mostly likely to be the one giving you troubles.

I wouldn't recommend a powerflex mount. You will shake yourself to pieces. But yes, those can be fitted in situ if you manage to knock the old one out. I tried and failed miserably..
