pug 406 1996 petrol 1.8, fuel pump not priming

Hi there

I have been having a problem with the car not starting intermittently,

changed fuel pump, worked for a day, now will not prime, however, when connected direct to battery, pump works,

at a loss, apart from the multi relay next to the ECU or the ECU itself or inertia switch, does anybody have any ideas what could be causing this?
