1998 1.9 DT - lack of boost/power.

Hello all.

I have a 1998 406 1.9DT Estate as a daily hack. Ever since I've owned it the engine has been flat as a pancake (I have driven a near indetical 406 1.9DT so know that its massively down on power).

It feels suspiciously like a lack of boost (although the boost pipes are pressurising a bit when the engine is rev'd).

I intend to have a good go over it during the Xmas break (oil, filters etc) and try to find the cause of the lack of power but thought it would be best to ask here in case there is something obvious I should start with before I go pulling it apart.

My initial thoughts are to check that the wastegate isn't stuck open, check that the Turbo isn't shagged and look for a split boost pipe or holes in the intercooler.

Its hard to describe why it feels like a lack of boost but I'm sure it isn't a fueling issue and it runs smoothly enough (nice idle, no flat spots) but just no power, like an old Nissan 2.2 NA Diesel Pick-up I used to drive.

It smokes a little (but no excessively), it has done 255k but the engine, gearbox and all ancillaries were replaced at 80k by Peugeot.

Any help welcome.

80K is a long time ago, give it a good service, oil and all the filters, check the in-tank strainer, search for my post "before and after" and give it a good blast up the motorway.
You might blow a few cobwebs out!

Well after some investigation and work I'm pretty sure its the cam timing that's wrong. Its boosting well, its well serviced and not smoking much at all. Just completely flat and gutless) Probably time to take it out back... Old Yeller style (scrapyard)

my car has a power issue same as yours its a 1.9 td on a 1998r plate

i know my fault lies with the throttle cable, if you get sum1 to press your peddle just make sure the pump is at max wen peddle is pressed fully down

my pump only goes half way wen peddle is pressed, adjusting the cable next to the pump makes a huge difference

also my throttle peddle is very stiff to press and sumtimes wen changing gear you cant actually feel the peddle under your foot it comes up that slow with it being stiff

not to bothered about the power issue tho yet as long as my car hits 30mph im happy but i will get a new 1 in the new year

it could be worse you could have a hdi in limp mode, then the turbos just non existant.
