Edit: I've moved this to its own thread as I considered it would just drown if I left it where it was - Steve_E

Hi i have a 2000 2.0 hdi (90) in china blue ,mine has done 148000 and runs great it has a just developed a diesel leak from the hight pressure pump though but still starts ok but i am going to sort it out,i thought my car had done a few miles until i was in the back of a taxi (406 hdi) in liverpool on a visit to family there and said to the driver i have one of these and asked the mileage he had done and he said 329'000 !!!i looked over his shoulder to check and it was as he said. The only thing he had wrong with it was the hub links at the back were knocking as he went over bumps in the road i know as i have changed mine before as it annoyed me not that its an mot failure but its annoying.cheers adam.

Make sure diesel isnt getting onto the inside of the timing belt or it wont just be the pump you'll need to replace. If the timing belt slips, it'll mash your engine up! Get it checked soon.
ok i need to do it anyway it stinks lol,i suppose the diesel softens the belt ?and then it breaks.really these pug 406's are great cars i have had lots of french and other makes of car and this 406 is above them all for reliability ,comfort ,economy and sheer value for money with its extras.p.s i have never had a nice renault car(although i do have a master van)

Ah on other thing thats wrong with my 406 is there has always been a little pinking type noise that it gets at about 2-3000rpm it goes away after 3 and sounds ok again,im no diesel expert but i think its a injector related diesel knock?maybe a partially blocked injector it has always had it and i have done loads of miles with it like it if i dont push the pedal too hard it doesnt make the noise its only under load.any suggestions as to what it is and do you know if the injectors can be serviced ?cheers adam

But, on reading it again, perhaps I shouldn't have bothered  Anyway, it was the amount of replies that did it, hence me putting them all into 1 post here.

Anyway, sorry to mess you about, welcome :cheesy:

The injector noise is endemic I'm afraid, we had a big discussion about it here and it turns out that a small amount of wear in the injector will allow too much fuel past on "pre-injection" stage (pre-injection - a small amount of fuel is meant to be injected early to create smoother combustion and reduce noise ha ha). It doesn't appear to affect consumption as such, but even if you have the injectors refurbished this isn't a part of them that will be repaired.
