Hey guys another problem.
Ok the engine seems to be louder than when i got the car, its seems to be tapping/knocking. The noise follows the revs i think. the car is high mileage but can this be fixed? i realy want to keep the car, so dont mind spending on it.
Any thoughts? My friend mentioned timing?

(i have the 2001 pug 406 2.0 HDI , with 108k on)

Hi mate,
IThink if you had timing problems you wouid have other symptoms,
eg, stuggle to start,
Smokey,
and they do rattle if its out but , normaly theyre a swine to start if timings out,


Have you tried an oil change or giving the car a flush sometimes it helps, ?

The car is not the best at starting, sometimes it struggles especially when its cold outside.

Will change the oil and see what happens.

have the bottom pulley checked out on the cambelt ?

quite common for them to go and come loose

you think 108k is high milage ?

i'll let you into a little secret , its not even run in yet mate
pug diesels are well known for acheiving well over 200k , keep it serviced yearly and it will run over 200k easily

108k is low

Bottom (dual mass) pulley is the first thing to check - look for rust / iron filings in that area. Easiest to see if you take the inspection cover off under the wheelarch.

Could be injectors, mine are worryingly noisy. Injector noise goes at exactly 3,200rpm. And the only cure is to sell both kidneys to buy a new set of injectors

Check out the crank pulley as above though, it could be serious.

Nasty, nasty noise when they get near the end of life

so the crankshaft pulleys a dmf style thing also? a solid conversion is whats needed.
Other signs of loudness could be a blow out in the exhaust as i had, the car got quite loud.

very low mine just reached 238,000 christmas eve

wow theres plently of life left in a lot of 406s yet.

hey guys quick update.
having the car on the ramp i found a nice big whole in the exhaust on the bend just before the backbox!
Im also going to check the pulley and see if needs replacing.

Could anyone reccommend any exhaust? This may sound stupid but can you get a sporty sound out of a diese? or should I stick with the standard?

I bought a Powerflow stainless steel exhaust system (yes steve_earwig, I'm whoring Powerflow again, and no, I'm not getting paid! ) for my 1.8 petrol.

It cost £320 (designed, built, fitted, inc. VAT), which was more than £100 less than what I was quoted for an original Peugeot exhaust system.

The stainless steel system will outlive the car. Furthermore, Powerflow provide a lifetime warranty on the system, for as long as you own the car, and as long as you take it back to your Powerflow dealer for a quick free inspection once a year.

There's some 2.2 HDi owners on the Coupe Club who have had stainless systems fitted. Sure, you can get a sporty exhaust note from a Diesel - you need to tell the dealer that you want a sport sound from your exhaust.

The only caveat is, you gotta tell your insurance company you've had one fitted, as they're seen as performance modifications - even if, like me, you only fitted one because your original system had gone to pot and it'd cost more to put another rot-prone system back on the car.
