Mine sounded like a light tapping at first, and only whilst idling. As soon as you touch the pedal, the noise dissapeared. It then progressed to what I perceived to be a "death rattle". A bit louder and more like a knock.
Ive heard that all too often before!!
The shim falls out of its slot in the pulley, and gets torn up as its wound round and round. The light tapping noise is actually the shin scraping off the inside of the pulley, and the knocking is it hitting the cam belt cover as it tries to depart the pulleyand gets torn up.
My pulley is still tight, with no play at all in it, but further diagnosis is required to ensure that further damage wont occur. I dont have a problem with the belt falling off, but if the pulley tries to seperate, and goes through the cam belt cover, then OH NO, you guessed it!

Dunno about Cam Belt, but it can certainly make its own belt come off, dunno what damage that would do. I'm just taking me time when driving now, low revs as poss.

THis kind of sounds like the noise my engine makes. started at tap at idle, getting worse over the last year, to a thumby kind of noise that tends to go away after long drive.
Had the garage look at the pully twice, they claim its ok. there is certainly not extenal wear or loseness in the pully. My other possibablity is the air con pump.

Just had mine sorted today. It seemed when my Cam Belt was done at 96k (it has 119k now) the Pulley was not put back on properly, it wasn't lined up right and just forced on (by a fckin Peugeot Dealer as well). Anyway got the pulley from a breakers yard ?20 (better than ?70-?90 for new), didn't cost much for labour neither. So I'm happy now. Might give it a bit bashing later on, as I'm driving 140 miles to Manchester and back home on Wed and doing it again on Fri.

I ordered a new pulley/vibration damper from Euro car parts at the weekend. That and a new auxillary belt is stinging me for £65. I will fit them myself though and save on labour.
mine is still making a ticking noise just like a bloody old Ford. Its embarrising!
Hope parts will be here by tuesday or wednesday. Fingers crossed.

I dont think so, but it is a damped unit with the rubber mounts.
I had a look on e-bay as well, and theres a pulley for 65 quid + 5 p&p, but it looked to be a solid unit, like the ones I was advised to stay away from. A mechanic mate of mine has fitted the euro car parts one to a 110HDi before, and it still runs faultlessly after 2+ years.
It cant be any worse than the one thats one it at the moment.
Theres some wear evident on my cam belt cover, which I will have to repair when I fit the new pulley.
I will also check the condition of the cam belt, and tensioners during the same operation. While im in that far anyway.

Hi all,
Ive been away on my hols, but before I went, I fitted the new pulley and aux belt, as well as inspecting the cam belt. It all went quite well, and theres no more rattling/ticking noise!
Then I realised that my exhaust is buggered as well. I got hold of some 61mm dia exhaust pipe, and set upon my zorst with my trusty old mig welder. The flexable pipe just after the turbo was corroded at its crimped ends, so I cleaned them up and welded them up good and proper. While I was at it, I used the 61mm pipe I had, to replace the cat. My exec is now very quiet, and back to how it was when I bought it. I didnt really notice any performance difference in removing the cat, but every little helps I suppose.

Hiya Welton,
I really dont like having to get a garage to do ANYTHING to my cars. I even fit tyres myself using a mates machine. I cant remember the last time my car needed a mechanic involved, if ever.
Tight as a ducks bum hole man!!
The pulley and belt change only took an hour to do, and the zorst took about an hour and a half to get just perfect, but it wont need replacing for quite a few years yet.
