Hello,
I need to replace the starter motor on my 1997 2.1 td manual estate,as its slow cranking over.i cant afford new and iam looking at second had off ebay.
Could someone please tell me which starter motors fit. ie XM ,Zantia or 406 1.9 td as i dont want to find it dosnt fit and then have to end up buying a new one. Thanks markyp

are you sure its not a dead battery ??

just checked ebay and some people are listing it as the same as a 1.9 some say it only fits the early 2.1.

I put the battery on charge and after about 10 mins it was showing fully charged so the battery seems ok, although i might take it for a free winter test at halfords or the likes to make sure. I have put the lights on when cranking the engine over and they do not dim. The engine cranks over a few turns slowly and then fires, if it cranked over quickly the the starting would be instant.

are you anywhere near nottingham as i have a spare you can try if you want.

Thanks for the kind offer omega. Iam probably about 70 miles away(long sutton lincs) so quite a round trip, but if you would like to sell it i could arrange a day to come over. Once again thank you for the offer

i dont think it would be worth it for you to come all that way then as you can buy them for about 20 quid off ebay.

I removed the starter motor today and cleaned it up, then removed end cap and removed the brushes mounting assembley. The arbour was black and glazed over and the grooves blocked,so i scraped the grooves clear and cleaned the copper arbour with a scouring pad until it was shinning.
The brushes looked to be half worn and original, so lots of life left,cleaned all the connections and refitted. Reconnected the battery and tested ..
All good Engine cranked over nice and crisp and fired quickly.. I was that happy that i drove to tesco and filled the tank up £85 back to reality..
Also noticed all the mitsibushi logo on the starter and brushes, so must be good for another 100,000 miles.
