Help, timing belt on 406 HDI 2.2

Hi guys, i changed the timing belt/pulleys/water pump on my 406 2.2 hdi (2001) last night and it has been making a whirring/howling noise since. I only drove it around the block, i have just taken it all apart and noticed that the outer edge of the belt is hitting inside of the crankshaft AUX pulley. outside edge starting to fray.
I have just taken the pulley off and started the engine for a few seconds and the belt is moving off.
The water pump is running true/fine, the pulleys/belt are identical....
Has anyone any idea what is causing this? surely the belt shouldnt be throwing itself onto the inside of the crank pulley. Is this causing the noise? Im pretty sure the belt tension is ok.

I've not done a 2.2 HDi, (yet), but it looks the same as the 2.0.....
I assume you have checked for play in the water pump, idler(11) and tensioner(9) pulleys?
If you undid the camshaft pulley adjusting screws, (3), did you definetly tighten them back up?
I guess you'd have to have the aux belt pulley off the crankshaft - could any of those bits have gone back unevenly?
Suppose a dodgy belt is not impossible either.
I got a mechanic to change the belt on my previous HDi and it whined noticably afterwards. After several rows over it, I just changed it again myself, (i think properly). I didn't have the fancy gauge to check the tension with, but our resident expert, jasper5, recommends seting it so you can just about turn the idler pulley without the belt moving. Remember to rotate the engine by hans a few times after adjusting, then re-check the tension.

Sounds like it could be a tight tensioner, that's the sort of noise you might get with too much tension on the tensioner pulley.
Some fraying on the outside of the belt isn't that unusual, but try spraying WD40 on the inside of the crank pulley or just put a small dab of vaseline on the bit with the fraying and see if it stops the noise.
Check if the outer timing belt casing is touching the crank pulley or the belt.
Oh, and be careful running the engine with the cranl pulley off....it's possible to fling the belt off....i've seen it happen

Guys, many thanks for your replies, it was in fact, the belt tension. I slackend it off and the noise went quieter, so i kept tweaking it untill there was no noise. When she was about right, id say you could just about twist the belt 180.
It would have been easier with one of them posh digi tensioning tools

Glad you sorted it out
I have never used a tensioning tool in 41 years of being in the car repair business.
I have found that the best tension is when you can just about turn the tensioner pulley by hand against the belt, turning it easy is too slack, can't turn it is too tight....this has worked for me many, many times over the years, has never failed me.

Dogslife- Havent attacked the particle filter yet but it is on my hit list. I bought the car off my uncle, it has been very well looked after since new. I looked through the history and it wasnt that long ago when my uncle spent alot of money on the FAP system, so he wasnt too keen on the idea of me smashing the guts out of it and getting a re-map. He had it re-filled/filter checked/cleaned/and 2 sensors replaced. On the otherside of the coin, i want rid of it and a nice re-map for better economy/power. How is yours going? who re-mapped yours?
