Engines Stalls when Throttle Pedal Touched

Hi
Got a problem with our unlucky Green 406 2.0 HDI (110) W reg.
The service light has been coming on intermittantly and my other half had it read on the computer at work, it has directed us to the fuel rail and the throttle sensor.
He got home last night and started fiddling and unfortunately she didn't like it and now won't run if you touch the accelerator (which isn't any good if you want to go anywhere)
The only thing he touched was the Accelerator Pedal Sensor, if we leave it unplugged she will sit idling nicely but as soon as you connect it up and touch the gas she cuts out.
Went and got a known good replacement Accelerator Pedal Sensor but this made no difference, so took that back to get money back and the guy there told me he didn't think it could be that, if we take it in to him, he'll stick it on machine as he has planet system that peugeot use which will read it better than the Wurth one my other half has at work.
Has anyone got any suggestion as to what it could be before we spend a fortune on diagnostics
Yours hopefully
Samantha

That's a weird one, almost as though the pump is developing almost zero pressure and can only supply enough fuel to idle. Unless someone comes along and says "I had that exact same fault and it was..." you could spend ages changing components, or go to this chap - he seems quite amenable to changing parts then changing them back if they didn't help, unlike a lot of garages and especially the dealers who will change parts until the fault clears and charge you for the lot.

This came up on here before but alas there doesn't seem to be an answer on the thread I found...

It has got me stumped for sure

Shot in the dark as I don't know the HDI engine but is there some sort of over pressure cut out ?
Obviously there is quite a lot of pressure in the fuel system which presumably increases when you press the loud pedal, would a blocked injector cause something similar ?
Does it sound ok on tick over or rough like it's not firing on all cylinders ?
Feel free to ignore or mock, I drive a desk all day and fix pc's at night

Are there air bubbles from the fuel filter housing?

There's a bit of difference between pressing the throttle and nothing happening at all and pressing the throttle and the engine dying. I was thinking maybe the earth mod but I don't think it kills the engine or anything, just puts the engine management light (and presumably the traditional antipollution warning up too). Then again the lady's other half was fidding about so I wonder what it runs like with NO earths

Hi Folks
Thanks for all the input, other half brought computer home from work last night, cleared all codes and started her up and reread her, High pressure diesel regulator jammed.
New bit just under £700 but poss recon for about £200 plus fitting and cleaning the fuel rail and system. Its been suggested may be able to clear it by unsrewing 2 screws by solenoid and on removing it clean metal filings which are contaminating the system. Will give this a go tonight or at weekend and let you all know how we get on
Thanks
Samantha

I would have a look in the fuel filter bowl for any further filings as that is a sign of failing "in tank pump" easy enough to change but you dont want any of those filings going any further as they will surely do more damage in the engine.

700 quid? This is turning into a money pit

Presumable this is for the pressure regulator & pump combined, so perhaps the mechanic is thinking if swarf got this far then the pump won't be long for this world.

Just thought I'd update and thank you all for your input, after patiently awaiting a reasonably priced second hand High Pressure Diesel Pump on ebay, we fitted it last weekend and the car runs like a dream and the dreaded Engine Management light is now out.
Then.... we took it for a test drive, but the rear brakes had seized so after giving it a big push we got it moving and we now have a nice repetitive knock from NSR wheel - Joy!!!!!!
Looks like someone will be stripping rear brakes this week!!!
More Joy!!!
Well at least the weather is warmer!!!!
