Diesel performance chip.....Anyone tried one?

On Ebay there seems to be a lot of these chip/tuning box's that claim to release a load of horses. Now I know the proper way is to get perfomance from an HDI is to have it remapped, but what about these tuning box's, anyone tried one, results........Or are they a load of rubbish tricking the ECU into dumping a load more fuel into the system?
Here is a link for one of them......

This.
They're also going to be MOT fails under the new VOSA regulations.
At best, these boxes will give a bit more power, but it will use more fuel all of the time, resulting in a drop in fuel economy. A well-designed remap of the engine's ECU can provide better fuel economy as well as higher HP/torque.
At worst, you could damage your engine and/or ECU...

Yeah, these chips just make the fuel pump run very high pressures to the injectors - all the time

not too good for long term use imo.
A proper rolling-road remap is the best where they can keep an eye on everything including what comes out the back and 'tune' the car on its own merits.
Course, feel free to get one and write up a little review about it

actually if it came to the stage where the car was worth around the £600.00 mark then it'd likely be worth a punt just to see what goes but if you care about the thing and need to rely on it then......

Thanks guys
Well I wont be buying one! I live 5 miles from the company called 'Superchips' They have been going for years and are very very good.....But!! Since our fantastic goverment have put our fuel prices up so have Superchip's upped there prices as it's well known they increase MPG so have heard a lot of people saying about getting there car remapped for economy now........Bloody fuel prices (tiny rant there!)

You're a lucky man. It's a fair old drive for me to go there, but I can well reccommend them. Really nice guys in there & they know exactly what they're on about.

You wouldn't catch me doing it either.

I always fancied getting a proper map up until recently, I just have too many miles on the engine and it worries me that remapping for more power would blow the turbo or something.

dont get it-people say wont ever try one etc etc, then,,,,,but if my car was worth ???,i'd maybe try it.
why? someone just said they dump more fuel thru the injectors.Cant be as simple as that surely, otherwise why would some chip suppliers say they'll guarantee money back if mpg is worse etc

I did a lot of research into these little boxes some time ago, I was toying with the idea of getting my car chipped but I was also interested in the workings of these units. Some of them increase the pressure of the fuel rail, if it's a Hdi, others are just potentiometers that intercept the signal from the inlet air temperature sensor and fools the ecu into thinking that the incoming air is cooler, the ecu then tells the fuel pump to advance the timing and you get more power. There are also units that connect to the maf meter that do similar to the air temp mod but to be honest the best way to get better economy and power is to get a remap and a dyno session.

Mine came with one, so as it was free i plugged it in. Just intercepts the signal to the fuel rail and i assume boosts the pressure. I don't believe it ups the pressure constantly as it wouldn't require that complex a circuit to do that, but it certainly increases the throttle response.
I unplugged mine for a couple of weeks a while back and actually noticed a reduction in fuel economy (from 78mpg in 4th @30 trundling through town to 45mpg). It also made a big difference when towing my caravan, so much so i plugged it back in for the return journey.
i also have the 180bhp remap file and will try it when i can afford the time to fix it if it goes wrong.
