ive had a good look at the exhaust and all seems fine and alined properly. its done it since i got the car but seems to be getting worse. i took the exhaust off a few weeks back and refitted it with new clamps and had to bend it here and there to get it to fit properly as its a poor fitting nonoem one fitted before i got the car. sounds like its knocking close to the front on the bulk head but not sure the engine seems solid on its mountings. its a puzzler if you keep the rpm up it dosent do it

it couid be the bottom mount that as passed it,
it might be Metal on metal,
Mine did this when i first got it and i temp Bodged it with afew peices of hose pipe and some Mastic,
look at the mount and see if the iner rubber as perished all way round.
you wont feel any play in the mount by pulling the engine from the top as the side ones will level it out,
the bottom one is more of a Roll-restrictor for the engine,

Yup mate,
its Drive shaft out to replace them sorry,
or other than that you can Temp Bodge them bit of Hose-pipe and something like Tiger seal stops the Metal-on metal on noise,
Mines lasted 5mths with the Hose-pipe but itl be Getting changed shortly

If it doesn't knock going forwards, I can't see how it could be an engine mount issue - the car's engine doesn't turn backwards when you put it in reverse!
First thing I'd check is if it's related to drive or not. Take it to a hill and roll backwards in neutral. If it's still making the noise it's probably the handbrake shoes
