Sat in a car park outside Wembley the other day with the engine idling when the car rocked slightly. No one around, got out of car looked around it but found nothing out of place so drove back home to Cheltenham. On the journey home I thought the power delivery felt different. Next day still felt different to normal and a slightly deeper exhaust note. Looked underneath and found the centre section had snapped through just in front of the flange that joins onto the back box. Lifted back box off its hangers and carried on, car doesn't sound much louder, just slightly deeper, but it revs easier now. Anyway phoned round for a price all coming out at about £140 so phoned local motor factor, £61 + vat sir. Up on ramps the weekend.

i would never send my car in a garage for exhaust. on the ramps and do it myself ..

There's the spare wheel underneath which I shunted around to wherever my head was for worst-case protection as well as 2 axle stands and 2 jacks... Nowadays of course I'd just use my decent jack to lift the side of the car a couple feet in the air in my garage, axle stand it, and do the job in a heck of a lot less time

Actually scrap that. The exhaust I put on the saloon was dirt cheap (something like £60 delivered for the centre+rear sections) and god did it sound awful. If I need a new one on my coupé I'll be off to powerflow and getting them to make one as close to the ridiculously expensive OEM jobbie as possible which is damn quiet unless being gunned.

Just a quick question, are the clamps OK to use again or is it advised to use new ones? They're not the genuine clamps they are 2 piece with 2 nuts and bolts. They weren't tight when I took the back box off so I dont think they have deformed.

For anyone else having a similar problem, and wanting to get it sorted as cheaply as possible - The middle box and the back box were fine on my 406, but the pipe between them was in a real mess, and the flange where the intermediate pipe joins the rear box had completely disintegrated.

I bought a repair section that completely replaced the intermediate length of pipe for £16 on ebay + £10 delivery. The old pipe was cut off a few inches from the middlebox, the repair section slips over the leftover stub and is then clamped on, and then clamp it to the rear box.

The buggers took ages to deliver it from Wolverhampton to Aberdeenshire though, and they didn't put the clamps that I'd also bought into the consignment, but as they only cost £2 I couldn't be arsed to complain about it.

But for your car it looks like you can get the middlebox c/w pipe for £36.62 delivered, which might be worth considering if your middle box isn't great

Yep thats the one. I saw the repair pipe on their main website. I'll give them a ring on Monday, thanks.

Phoned up this morning but the bore size of the repair section is too small to slip onto the OD of the existing pipe so I am going to have to replace the centre section complete.

Mine was a perfect fit.

Might be worth checking out the 2nd link, £36 delivered for the mid box and pipe.
