Engine Faults and Things to Look out for

Hi,
I used to own a 406 but sold it last year and replaced it with a classic mini. As much fun as the mini is, it simply is not as practical as the 406 nor does it do 50mpg!!! (more like 25mpg!)

Anyway when i owned the 406 the only issues i had with it were, 1. break pads wearing quickly, 2. Turbo pipe had to be replaced 3. anti role bar worn/ needed replacing.

Is there anything that i should look for when getting another one? My one had done 180,000 miles without fault (apart from the above) so its pritty bullet proof. I was just wondering if there was anything that i should be looking out for?

Am looking at getting a 2000 reg mk2 (face lifted version) with the 90 or 110 hdi engine.

Any tips would be great! (also if anyone has one going for about £1,000 then let me know!)

Thanks

Nick

If you've previously owned a 406, I guess you'll know a good one when you drive it. I can't see any sensible reason for choosing a 90 over a 110, as the latter is more powerful and more economical with it. There are plenty to choose from at knock-down prices these days.

(There's also the 2.2 HDi 136 which has more grunt, but is less economical than the other two. I love it. :cheesy: )

Personally I would go for an Executive, GTX, or SE to get cruise control etc. You won't pay any extra to buy it and provided you rigourously prove all the toys work, you get a very comfy armchair to watch the countryside slide by from. 8)

Check the centre rear seat belt. It's not uncommon for these to jam (at least on D8s)

diesel mechanic i was speakin to today said that the 90hp HDi is very quirky indeed.even tho mines never had a problem before this apart from a fuel-leak and my indicator stalk needed replacing.OH another thing.dont get one with the com2000 unit.££££££'ssss
