Have new engine!

Well i picked up a new engine today (well new to me anyway) It was an ebay buy with 67K miles and full history as opposed to the 142K and worn rings mine has (although if youve read my other thread re fuel economy its still soldiering on)
Anyhow the engines out of a Xantia Activa with failed suspension rams and flakey paint syndrome  So il be fitting it this weekend, but can anyone tell me why the activa doesnt have a recirculation (dump) valve? the connection is there on the hot pipe but with a factory fit cap and clip over it, and on the intake side there is like a moulding where the pipe would go in but its got no stub pipe on it.
Perhaps Citroen thought they didnt need one? Anyway its good news really as i can put a proper dump valve on and not have a stub pipe to block off on the intake.
Does anyone know if there were any other differences between the Activa and 406 turbo lumps?

This is the first I've heard of there being a difference between the activa and tubby engines

It's possible the previous owner did it for some reason... Can someone with the citroen equivalent of servicebox have a peek?

its possible but the rubber caps look factory fit, plus they were proper clips and not worm drive clips?

And something i noticed today, the throttle body is different as where on the 406 the throttle cam is directly fitted to the TB, the activa is fitted 90 degrees to the TB so the cable comes from the other direction. ive googled an image from an activa engine bay and that one is the same too, they dont have recirc valves.

heres a link to a pic of the activa engine bay

Would we be talking about this 1424 X4 cut valve? The Xantia aint got one :? Looks like there's a fair few changes...

Okay i have taken my engine and box out today (on the drive in the drizzle :( ) and there are a good few differences between the two inlet manifolds, firstly the activa has a cast alloy inlet manifold, where my 406 is plastic. the engine looms are very different, the fuel rails are different, the fuel lines on the activa are rubber hoses while mine are plastic.

So the easiest thing i could do was to swap inlet manifolds over. I think to be honest my engine is a later one, although the one going in has done half the mileage. Ive never come accross and engine with so many sensors on it, The Nissan 200 i have didnt have half as many as this and the ECU could still support another 100BHP.

Another thing i noticed was the inlet valve stems seemed to be thinner on the activa, which is odd. anyway il be fitting it back in tomorrow when ive got the gearbox swapped over. im leving the engine loom and the inlket manifold off till the engine is in as i could only get the car just high enough to drag the engine out, I dont have a hoist anymore and using one poxy trolley jack :(

might take some pics tomorrow.

Valves have the same part numbers Xantia, Xantia 2 and 406. (But you did say "seemed")

Yeah i could be wrong, I had to do some more swapping today. The heater pipe from the heater matrix with the bleed valve on it is different, the activa one runs accross the top and down the cambelt cover, where as the 406 runsdown the nearside of the engine then accross right under the exhaust manifold.
Ive got the engine in now, it was a right nightmare using one small trolley jack, i had the car right up high on axle stands to slide the old engine out from underneath. I fitted the engine loom on the floor. There reciepts for a cambelt change last year so that was okay although the clutch was ready for a change, but again mine has been done a couple of years back so i just swapped it over, exhaust is on, drive shafts in, gearbox refilled, all water pipes back on, air con compressor, alternator, PAS pump and starter on, wiring plugs re connected, battery tray back in and gear box cables reconnected.

just the subframe to pop back on and re fit the inlet manifold and re connect the charge air pipes and other stuff i cant remember right now.
I was cursing the day when my old unit got robbed and all my tools and equipment that took me years to build up was taken
Im only now just starting to build up my tool kit again, next on my list are, engine crane, bigger trolley jack and some other biggish stuff and il be ready to be doing some more barrow jobs

Well its up and running :cheesy: bit of spluttering to begin with but settled down once the coolant got round, a road test round the block and it seemed fine, runs about 10 degrees cooler than the old one and its definitely smoother at low revs.
IL go round tomorrow and check it all over again.

i have faith in my work, its the engine that worried me lol! Its done 200 miles now so ive started giving it a bit of boost, it doesnt feel as quick as the old one but the ecu has been off so it might need to relearn some stuff? Im guessing its that type of ecu? When im happy im planning to fit a boost controller and boost gauge lol!
