Well I have now owned and ran my 2001 1.8 Rapier for some 4 months now and done 6000 mile in that time. When I first bought it I gave it a service using Castrol 10W40 Semi Synth oil. I also replaced rocker cover gaskets, and carried out a sniff test just for a sanity check.

The car is now on 106,000 and is running very well giving me 37.2MPG and everything does as it should, slight judder probably rear engine mount but that can wait.

The trouble I am having is the oil consumption.

Since the service I am going from top to bottom of dipstick in the space of 2.5K, to top it back to the top takes about 1.5Litres. That to me seems a hell of a lot of oil, and effectively means I am changing the oil every 7.5K miles without even trying. There is a very slight blue puff of smoke on initial startup (valve seals maybe) but soon disapears on warm up, and nothing evident therafter. There are no leaks at all and HG is fine.

Just wondering if anyone out there has ever had a head refurbed, and roughly how much? Or am I worrying too much?

How much oil does a petrol 1.8 EW7J4 get through, anyone else got one that can give me there oil consumption?

if its just a slight out put of smoke on start up id try adding some oil treatment,
ive used Wyns stop smoke in the past and its cured it -that was on a ford mondeo tho,

if it was kicking out smoke on gearchange or going up hill under strain id have the Valve stem/seals done,

a c/h rebuild price goes off what you want to have done,
the company iuse preasure test heads skims/ cleans replaces seals but uses the the original valves,
iget them done for around £120
price goes up if i ask them to replace valves or port grinding etc,

Could be worth doing a compression test?

Also check it's not chucking it out cos of a blocked breather.

I had a Montego years ago which did less than 500 miles / pint if you filled it to the full mark, but almost nothing if you left it just above minimum.
