Ahh well, if you've had a recent turbo failure then it'll smoke from the exhaust once hot and boosting. I had it with calamity james's 405

I dont suppose you are using Veg Oil as fuel? If so its normal as Veg burns with a white/grey smoke.

Just using normal diesel, I'm pretty sure it is the fuel pump

Checked the cambelt timing which is fine
pulled the injector sensor wire apart and engine started knocking?clattering (so assuming internal advance and retard is ok)

Symptoms:
Engine doesn't smoke at idle
If left idleing for long periods when the accelerator is touched it bellows white smoke
Once the engine is warm there is alot less smoke
Engine takes longer to start when warm

I was hoping to save it from the scrapyard.......

White smoke normally means that the fuel injected into the cylinder is not burning correctly.(the smoke will burn your eyes).
Reasons for this are
1.Engine /pump timing out.
2.Fuel starvation to the pump causing the pump timing not to operate correctly.
3.Low engine compression
4.Water/petrol in the fuel.
