Timing out.... waaay out

Gone to change to cambelt on my 406 petrol turbo and the timing marks dont line up. Locking pin in the top pulley and the crank pulley is around 25 degrees out.
The engine runs fine and always has done, what on earth could this be?
Also having problems getting the aux bottom pulley off, any tips?

give the pulley a soak in Rost Off and tap it with a hammer/block of wood. Otherwise, you might need a puller if there's room for one.

So yours is the same as mine then... Trust me, this engine is cock'd up lol

Firstly, Lock the crankshaft pully ensuring that you align the timing holes and insert the locking pin... now get under the car and using a home made tool... lock the flywheel by inserting said tool into the teeth ! Mark the camshaft sprocket in relation to the cylinder head... dont worry about locking the camshaft sprocket, just mark it up...

For some reason they do not both line up!

Now with the help of an assistant, get them to hold said tool into flywheel and then hit the bolt face with a hammer ( without damaging the face of the bolt ! ) then get your 22mm socket on the crankshaft pulley and an extension bar over the ratchet and pull hard....lol if your home made flywheel locking tool is in properly, then it will come undone !

Dont worry too much about the alingment of the holes, mine is way out on the camshaft sprocket timing hole, but I put it back where it was originally - - from the factory ! and its fine !

But the bottom pully sits on a woodriff* key and so if fitted properly cannot slip ??

the timing hoel is on the outside of the bottomn pulley.
the bottomn pulley is made up of 3 parts. an inner circle, a rbber dampner and an outer circle that is bonded to the inner circle with the dampner inbetween, the outer part of the pulley slips thus meaning the timing hole is no longer correct

strange, took the bottom pulley off.. pin in top pulley, marked the positions with tipex wound it round with pin out and low and behold the marks didnt line up.... this is strange.

I think the firing order was back to front hence the dodgy tickover and bugger all power despite the turbo boosting. Got to change the head now anyway as 1 or more valves are bent....

are you sure the valves are bent? if valvesare bent thengine prety much wont run due to not having compression, these turbo lumps run 8.5:1 comp ratio so you can get the teeth out a fair way before you get valve>piston contact

Reviving an old post

Well just finished rebuilding the engine after six weeks without a car to find out that the lower crankshaft pulley is... a ......... massive 45 degrees out on the timing holes, so my pulley has gone away to be repositioned :D £88 +vat to mr peugeot for a new one I think not!!!!!!!

Malachy, is the xsi unit the same size??? with the correct timing hole???? How much are they new???

niz you can achieve basic crank timing without the marks, get a long thin screwdriver, put it in cylinder no. 1 down the spark plug hole (crankshaft end but you already knew that) rotate engine until it stops rising once it starts to go down stop and rotate back untill it rises and stops and goes down then rotate forwards till it stops, i done this on a 205 gti 1.9, and as far as i know the car is still going
