welcome to the forum andy.
i know your problem mate. on the 1.9 xud there is an idle control.
just behind the air filter box you will see a bracket with a bolt on it and a cable coming off it. this cable runs to the back of the fuel pump.
i think from memory you have to screw it out , this pulls the valve on the pump that controlls the idle of the engine
when i bought my 1.9 2 half years ago i had the very same problem .
I WILL POST A PICTURE FOR YOU IN THE MORNING WHEN ITS DAYLIGHT

ok found a pic i had in my photobucket album
the RED arrows indicate were the idle speed controll is. you can see the circle thing on the right.
and the bolt on the left. just unscrew that bolt out with the engine running. if you look closely were the cable runs on the pump you can see it pulls a valve.
if you unscrew it out. keep unscrewing you will hear the engine revs drop

if it doesnt drop the revs when you unscrew it. try it the other way round and screw it in. either way it will drop the revs. i'm just not 100% which way it drops then revs
then simply tighten up the little nuton the bolt to hold it in position .
let me know how you get on

no it wont effect the cold start. i tried pulling it and that wont work. undo the little nut on the bolt so it free's the bolt.
mine has been in the same place now 2 years and has always started no problem even at -10

I tried this for 2 weeks revs on about 750 rpm but occassionaly it makes a really noisy crackling noise when accelerating sometimes it goes away and sometimes it stays (sounds similar to an old tractor) ive turned the revs back up and it seems to be ok apart from low mpg any clues???
