Weird anti-pollution fault
My car (see signature) has 194000kms, about 120k miles. I've had it for about 1000kms, 600 miles. So far all was perfect.
What happened:
Today I noticed that the car was strange. Minimum was around 900 rpm instead of 700-800. At low speeds the car seemed a bit more noisey than normal and had some kind of a strange vibration. At high speed I did not notice anything wrong. I thought the FAP was rigenerating.
I went into the highway. I was late so I was going pretty fast overtaking a truck. Over 150km/h (90mph), throttle on the floor. A loud beep, ANTIPOLLUTION FAULT message, and suddenly the throttle wasn't responsive anymore. I do not know if the car went off, I did not pay attention to that.
Engine warning light on, but "FAP blocked" light off.
I stopped. Car wouldn't turn on anymore.
30 mins pass, and suddenly the car would turn on, but with the same engine warning light on and the antipollution fault appearing on the MFD after 5 seconds.
Finally the requested (free!) help arrives and drives me to the workshop. The car drived like usual, if it wasn't for that engine warning light always on. I also tried some foot-to-the-floor accelerations and had no problem whatsoever. Minimum was normal at 800rpm.
When I get to the workshop the kind mechanic connects the car to the OBD2 reader, getting the following messages. Unfortunately I did not write them down:
- Something that did not seem important to us (me and the mechanic)
- Some antuipollution fault
- Low pressure in diesel injection system
He said that in his opinion it is the low pressure diesel pump located inside the fuel tank failing, due to the high mileage. When the car cooled down it could still go well, but it can fail anytime now.
He deleted the fault and now the car is fine. I'll bring it to the stealer on monday to see if they can see what's wrong.
Any opinion?
Anything similar happened to anyone?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Weird anti-pollution fault
Failure of the in-tank lift pump is quite common. Sometimes the brushes wear out in the motor, so they can work intermittently for a while before failing completely.
Try listening for the noise of the pump running when you turn on the ignition - it should run for about 4 seconds, then stop. If it does not run, sometimes knocking the tank, or the top of the pump assembly, (from under the back seat), will get it going again, at least temporarily.
If it's not this, check your fuel filter / drain any water from the filter bowl.
If you need a new pump, the dealer is expensive. In England, you can buy a replacement pump for about €70.00 from Eurocarparts. It is fairly easy to change the pump.
Be aware the message, 'ANTIPOLLUTION FAULT', is generated for ANY fault condition reported by the engine ecu.

Re: Weird anti-pollution fault
Thank you doggy. That is almost the same thing the mechanic told me. We switched the ignition on and the pump noise was normal, altough I did not pay attention if it stopped in 4 seconds. I'll check the fuel filter too, even though the previous owner said all filters were changed at 190000kms. What side is the pump (under the backseats)? Right side (uk driver's side)?dogslife wrote:Failure of the in-tank lift pump is quite common. Anyone else had this problem?
BTW is the low pressure pump easy to diagnose? I do not want to be left on foot again just to check if it spins.

Doggy, where did you find the 70€ quote? Also, is the 2.0 hdi and the 2.2 hdi pump the same?

Re: Weird anti-pollution fault
I saw it on eurocarparts.com, but when I checked agian it was not the correct pump, sorry!OdinEidolon wrote:Doggy, where did you find the 70€ quote? Also, is the 2.0 hdi and the 2.2 hdi pump the same?

The 2.0 & 2.2 are mostly the same - there is an exception, 2.0 HDi 90 with Siemens fuel system, does not have a lift pump, but it has a similar unit, with only astrainer and the level sensor, this is £67.20, hence my 'about € 70.00'.
The next cheapest one is £95.95, but this is out of stock....

Or try sending a PM to ade1122 over at the Coupe Club forums (http://www.peugeot406coupe.com/phpBB3), who is a breaker. The 406 Coupe has the same 2.2 HDi engine and running gear as the saloon and estate, so the fuel delivery system should be the same, including the in-tank pump.

Sadly I need the car thursday and thus I'll be pretty much obligated to get the pump from the stealer.highlander wrote:Or try sending a PM to ade1122 over at the Coupe Club forums (http://www.peugeot406coupe.com/phpBB3), who is a breaker. Re: Weird anti-pollution fault
FYI, the dealer quoted me 290€ all included, but they do not know yet if the problem is caused by the pump. I hope so.

Re: Weird anti-pollution fault
Some news on this one. Up to this week I just used the car taking care not to push it too hard. No problem at all. I then got the pump from eurocarparts, and the seal and gasket from Peugeot directly (ca 5£).
Replaced the pump (which was a complete pita to do) and eveything seems ok.
Today I went out for a trip and this is what happens:
- the car drives perfectly
- I push down the throttle hard for more than, say, 10 seconds. The car answers ok and all.
- I stop accelerating. The car now feels wobbly, power under 1400 rpm is less than normal. If I accelerate enough the vibrations disappear.
- If I stop (in 2 minutes time) the minimum is at 900rpm (instead of 700-800) and the car vibrates a lot. I can feel all moving around me. V-V-V-Vibr-r-r-rations! As said power under 1400rpm is lower than normal but if I accelerate enough the drive feels normal. Vibrations come back when I release the throttle or press it only a little.
- In 7-8 minutes everything goes back to normal.

Bad injector? It would be very expensive to change all of them, can your mechanic do a leak off test?

I do not see why a bad injector would cause problems only AFTER strong accelerations and only for a few minutes. Why should this happen?

Also this happens much more rarely now than a month ago, dunno why.

I was thinking sticking open after being fed highest pressure. Perhaps a leak off test while it is misbehaving?
