Hi All.
I'm sorry to intrude on your forum being a Citroen XM owner but I really need help from the other half of the family.
Following a rebuild of the engine XUD11ATE there's problems starting it and keeping it running. It's hard to start, difficult to keep running, smokes like a demon and knocks like hell. The pump and injectors came off an identical engine that I saw running without any problems. Both engines were fitted with Bosch injector pumps and both ran before the rebuild. I've checked the engine timing several times using locking bolts and a dial gauge to setup the injector pump following the Haynes manual. It could be that the engine is low on compression but I won't be able to test this until the compression gauge I bought arrives.
When I time the engine I end up with 1 locking bolt around the 7 o clock mark pinning the cam, 2 bolts pinning the injector pump at 12 and 4 o clock and a piece of tight fitting threaded rod into the flywheel behind the starter motor. The key way on the crank shaft is at about 11 o clock. I start threading the belt in both directions from the injector making sure all slack is on the tensioner side of the belt run. I tension the belt, removed the locking bolts, rotate the crank 2 or 4 times and check that the locking bolts will go back into position, which they always do. But the result is always the same. Slackening the injector pump mountings and rotating it has very little effect. From what I've read it sounds as though the pump timing is too advanced, what do others think? If so how is it possible?
Any advice would be gratefully received. Feel free to question what I've done and how I've done it.
Thanks.
Steve.
Advice please?
