Timing Question on 2.1TD

As you may well be aware my timing belt slipped causing pistons to hit valves and snap all 4 of the exhaust rockers. With the timing belt having slipped, it means that the timing bolts didn't line up when the engine was locked on the flywheel.

My question is if I put the cam and fuel pump to their locking positions, does this mean that everything is in the correct positions ready for when I put the timing belt back on, or have I missed something glaring obvious? Is there only one locking position for both the cam and fuel pump?

Belt was not that old (just under 2 years and 40k ish old). I had the entire lot replaced when I first got the car at the end of 2008.

Need to order the new timing belt kit (£40ish off eBay) and that's my job for the weekend. I had a new water pump put on 2 years ago when they did the belt last, so do you reckon I'll need another new one? Best to replace it while I've got the belt off?

Considering:

1) you need to take the timing belt off to change the water pump
2) how cheap a water pump is
3) how important a job it does
4) if it does seize up, it could still knacker your timing belt (or cause it to slip) and screw your engine all over again ...

Yes :)

hi i would change the pump while its striped for the cost involved so your belt didnt brake was it just slack? im just wondering if these engines have the same troubles as the 2.2 hdi as ive done 2 in the last 2 weeks that had broken belts both before they were due to be changed :frown:

Omega, yep engine still in the car. Would've been a lot more hassle taking the engine out I think. Fortunately I've got quite skinny hands and arms so have been able to get to most of the bolts without too much difficulty.

Will get the timing belt kit and water pump ordered up shortly. These ones are on eBay, Timing Belt Kit + Water Pump Kit. Do you reckon they'll be ok for the money? They're less than half the price of ECP and GSF!
