1999 Pug 406 110 Hdi - Drive belt tension problems
Hi
Fitted new lower damper pulley - fitting new belt (PAS & AC) 1740mm - No matter how much I adjust the eccentric tensioner I get the belt slapping about at the bottom - both notches line up - lots of spring in top auto tensioner - eccentric nut not moving to loosen
Someone said the direction you tension the eccentric can alter the dynamics - any info on this?
Am I missing something when tightening eccentric up? The auto tensioner is jiggling up and down big style but no play in wheel, spring resistance good - new crank lower damper wheel, Alternator, air con and power steering units not loose... I'm stumped

Have you got the right belt for the a/c compressor, put your vin into http://public.servicebox.peugeot.com
Though I have had this problem on my 2.1td even with the correct belt, tightening up properly has sorted that.

406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.

*** UPDATE ***
Got p1ssed off with the auto tensioner bobbing all over the place - had a can of wd40 in my hand, swore at it and gave it a sort of mardy blurt on the wheel - it stopped vibrating and ran well smooth - seems I need a new wheel (suspect bearings gone)

Wd40 dosent last on the pulleys tho it burns off eventualy,

it can feck up aux belts to softens the rubber,
you might be best picking up a fresh tensioner from a breaker if it goes again,
Good luck tho ihope the wd40 works for you its never done for me just wears off,
Coca cola as longer lasting efect than wd40 on pulleys so ive found out in the past
also fairy washing up liquid

i.e instead of them going hard and brittle, you use the wd40 to soften them a tad, and they last longer?
Maybe I got it wrong, but doesn't seem to have done me any harm

Maybe I got it wrong, but doesn't seem to have done me any harm
but nope it as the oposite affect, the softer the belt goes the less tighter itgoes and the tensioner just moves up to take the slack,the more the tensioner moves up the quicker it wears out, then you get belt slip,
wd40 as got traces of petrol in so it eats belts,
Wd40 atracts dust too so any dust and shite blowing around in the engine bay will stick to the belt,

Sutton Auto Factors £35 whole thing inc vat - but I've never changed one of this type, the last one I changed was from a 1.9TD and it was a b*stard to get out then back in again, is there a sticky on here on how to do the HDi one?

once the Ecu & the plastic box is out theres plenty of room to work on them,
1.9 td be awkward because of that stupid desighn -top engine mounting iguess,
more room on the Hdis as far as ican see,

I'll be glad when it's sorted - good motor but this has been a pain in the hole for a couple of months - changed lower damper on Saturday, new belt now the tensioner is having a wobbly

I had a similar problem with mine, turned out to be the alternator pulley knackered, replaced it with a new one, job done, no more slack on aux belt, and much quieter on idle.
if the tensioner bounce disappears over about 1500rpm, it could be the pulley as the culprit.

Cheers all - got the whole unit for £40 inc VAT from local auto factors - going on in 10 min - if it is alternator pulley I've still got my old one

Nope, that didn't work - soooo, had new crank damper, new belt, new auto tensioner - all torqued up and right as rain - right, it's getting a scrappy alternator and if that doesn't work then it's off to ebay

Anyone know which other motors use the same alternator as my scrappy doesn't have a 406 in - I've had a look but can't see any run off from the alternator pulley, I did fit it about 6 months ago on my drive and before I knew about the cones being spacers, could it be that now I've fixed the other wobbly bits or could the pulley be off and not show any wobble?
