can anyone give me the DEFINITIVE belt change interval for a 2.1 td? ive done a search on here and found conflicting time span's.
I only got the car on saturday and noticed that someone had thoughtfully tippexed "80,000" on the belt cover,as the car is now on 155,000 im just wondering if its iminant or do I have a few thousand miles to go.

The DEFINITIVE answer is .....
Up to July 1998....72,000 miles under normal conditions....60,000 miles under adverse conditions.
August 1998 onwards.....80,000 miles under normal conditions....48,000 miles under adverse conditions.
Oh! Welcome btw

You really are in unknown territory as cars get over 10 years old and have changed hands a couple of times. A sellers line of "yes mate the cambelt was changed last year" is a load of rubbish without evidence to back it up.
Golden rule = if in doubt get it changed (if you wanna keep it that is) although I have to say if you bought a £350.00 car as a temporary (or 12 month) run around then I'd chance it for what its worth. The 406's belt takes a fairly easy route so is less likely to fail than some cars imo (famous last words)

When it does go though, it will really ruin your day - all sorts of damage, and a big repair bill.

Shhh don't jinx it!!
I got the car for £0 from my uncle so I may chance it for a little longer, I think the Olympics may have hampered my available cash!
