hard to start when warm !!!!!!
It has always been hard to start when warm ever since I have had it , it always starts but turns over for ages then starts and gives off a big cloud of unburnt fuel , form cold it starts as I would expect it too . It has had two sets of plugs and has had a new glowplug relay(the one just behind the battery ) it has just had a relay replaced ( the one in the same compartment as the ecu) as a mechanic told me that sure as eggs that would be the cause as its a common fault , well sure as eggs it isnt because it hasnt maade any difference at all. It is now really getting on my t!ts , it is more embarassing as everyone starts looking over when it sounds like it isnt going to start then it does with the big cloud of diesel . It has always had the engine management light lit since i bought the car and the previous owner had bought it as a non runner and had the fuel injector pump overhaulled to get it running again, Any help gratefully received .

A very common problem with diesels it would appear, and from what I've read it could be caused by anything as simple a sticking stop solenoid to a worn injector pump. My 2.1 had a hot start problem a few weeks back which I traced to a leaking fuel pipe connection, I haven't had a problem since I sorted it. As far as the worn pump scenario, from what I've read the problem is caused because the injector pump can't build proper pressure with diesel when it's warmed up because the viscosity of the diesel changes. Of course, this only really applies to the older rotary style pumps, not sure if you have a HDI?

Well as his is the 406 forum I didnt think I had to tell you it is a 1.9 td pug 406 1998 not HDI , It has also had the injector return pipes all replaced as well .

Which engine does make a whole lot of difference, your 1.9 has a Bosch injection pump (partly mechanical), the 2.1 is Lucas (fully electronic, doesn't like veg oil) and the HDis are, well, insanely electronic and don't like anything overly muchstephenwhite990 wrote:Well as his is the 406 forum I didnt think I had to tell you it is a 1.9 td pug 406 1998 not HDI

Is this why you replaced the injection pipes, or did this happen after?
I think I'd be heading for the cold start device but I'm not the one with the experience here

Has anyone tried reading the codes off it? Would give you a clue why the management light is on. Rather than throwing more money at parts why not get a cheap code reader and see if the car will tell you whats up when you ask it nicely

I replaced the leak off fuel pipes as suggested in case there was a tiny split in one allowing air into the system , I do have a lead and tried to read the car with no success , which is the best free software I can get to use on a laptop ??????

We usually put our car details in our 'signatures', (the bit under each post).
Pre-2004 diesels didn't have to conform to any particular OBD protocol, so Pug used their own. Their PP200 will work with yours, (as I've used mine on my bro's 98 1.9TD). I don't think much else will.
In his case, the EML was due to injection timing being off, caused by a partly blocked fuel filter. Could also be a problem with the needle lift sensor / wiring, (No.2 cylinder I think, but not sure)?

I think they use SAE J2534-2 protocol...at least thats what they ask for if your downloading their own softwear.
