Pros/Cons of a 2.2 16v + carbon dynamic airbox?

Hullo all. I'm new to this forum and new to Peugeots, too. After many years of commuting public transport, a change of circumstances has put me back into the motorists market.


I'm looking for impartial and experienced advice on the pros/cons of fitting an aftermarket air-induction solution to a 2.2l 16v petrol engine, with c.70k miles on it and manual transmission.

I'm not looking for out-and-out performance - just a bit more mid-range "oomph" - and my intention is to get the ECU remapped after the uprated air-induction has been fitted.


The product of choice, in my mind, is BMC's Carbon Dynamic Airbox. A quick search on "BMC CDA" only brings up one other thread - for the 3.0l V6 engine - which went unanswered.

The "interweb" reviews sound positive - but please could any wise souls out there tell me if I'm doing the right thing, or simply wasting my time and money? Many thanks in advance.

Hi, welcome to the board!

The problem with the 2.2 petrol engine (EW12 J4) is that it's not particularly common amongst the 406. There aren't many of us on these board who have this engine. It is a great engine though.

You'll find more of them over on the Coupe Club (http://www.peugeot406coupe.com/phpBB3/), but don't think I'm trying to get rid of you - the more here the merrier! :cheesy:

Let me know what you find out about the BCA box, as I was thinking about getting one of those as well. Coupe Club forum member Nivek has designed an air scoop for the Coupe that should work with the BCA Carbon airbox:

The V6 boys noticed an improvement with the scoop, and Nivek himself has a 2.0 litre and found an improvement also. I don't know if he's got one suitable for 406 saloons and estates yet or not, but you could ask him ...

I've driven the 2.2 petrol in a 407, and it was a realy nice drive. lots of torque low down and some real poke and power when needed. Didn't get a chance to check the mpg though.

BTW, I've just clicked on your footnote link and seen the photo of your '02 coupe - ooh, she's a beaut! Rosso red just works on the coupe, doesn't it..

Though it's less powerful than the V6, it has better fuel economy than both the V6 and the 2.0 litre engine. It also has a fairly awesome soundtrack for a 4-cylinder engine 8)

When driving my old 1.8 saloon carefully, I got exactly the same mileage from the tank as I now do with the 2.2 Coupe (and that's with me driving it fairly aggresively 8))

PowerFlow exhaust being fitted on Tuesday; looking forward to that.

Highlander - good luck with the PowerFlow this week - I look forward to hearing how the drive differs afterward.

Will let you know how it affects the performance. I reckon I'm down a little on power with the leaky OEM exhaust anyway, hopefully this will push it back up to the original 160 HP and maybe give me a bit more.

Once you've got a stainless system and a nice induction system like the Nivek scoop, try taking the car for a remap. You might manage to get more than 180 HP out of it, which is not far off the 194 HP of the earlier of the two V6 engines (ES9 J4). That's my plan, but it will have to wait a while :cheesy:
