I have a RHZ engine in my car with 145k on the clock, when I put my foot down I get a lot of black smoke, if I have to acclerate under load ie up hill the EML will come on, I have plugged it in to a snap on brick and have had a couple of codes come up, both boost pressure too high and too low?? any ideas where to start looking?

The codes that come up are 0243 and 0246

Boost leak is probably the obvious one, (especially if you have a lack of 'go').

Failing that, check the MAP sensor, (on the pipe coming out the top of the intercooler), sometimes they get damaged or the little hose it's connected by gets broken.

Next, check connections to & cleanliness of MAF sensor.

If you don't stumble on the answer by then, you probably need the get it diagnosed with a Lexia3/PP2000 setup.

I don't really have a lack of go unless the EML is on then its in limp mode, the only thing I have found wrong with any pipes is one of the vacuum pipes was sooted up and blocked, now its clean it probably smokes more than it did, oh same I'm just outside wrexham, n Wales

Probably a leaking intercooler (or pipe therefrom/to).

Egr valve or egr actuator solenoid? Blank the egr, and see what happens.

it was one of the actuator solenoid vacuum pipes that was blocked originally, I have put new solenoids on it as there were the cheapest option in the hope it was them but theres no difference

Just took a look at these pipes and they are fine, however the intercooler has a massive 'blob' of goey oil in the corner so must be leaking, would this cause it?

Well, that`s a boost leak for sure, may well be the cause of your broblem.

So change the intercooler and go from there?

Sounds like a good start. And not a very complicated job either. You could try one from a scrappy if it looks in good nick. Make sure all the joints are air tight, otherwise you'll not achieve anything.

A large stone can damage the I/C and corrosion takes it from there although you can sometimes hear a rushing sound.

The ECU anticipates a certain airflow into the engine and injects diesel to suit however if a % of air leaks to waste then you'll get incomplete combustion and schmoke out the back.

Swapping the I/C for a known good one from a scrappy sounds like a plan but also have a very close look at the large bottom hose connection UNDERNEATH as it can rub on the radiator bracket and put a hole in it.

Intercooler has been changed and theres a complete difference in the way the car drives, no smoke and more power,

Good news!

I've always had some oil staining around the intercooler / bottom hose joint area, but noticed today it's worse and there is a little oil visible on the outside of the I/C.

How much did yours cost?
Anybody got a spare one?
Frank?

I only got it from the scrappy just because I didnt want to waste £100 if it wasn't the problem, this one happened to be a replecment that someone had fitted anyway and I got it for just £15!
