Juddering under acceleration at 40mph
Hi guys, new poster here. I just bought a 00 2.0HDi but it is exhibiting something strange while accelerating past 40 to 50mph. I initally thought that it just needed wheels balanced and tracking sorted but this has not fixed it. There is noticable body shake or judder above 40 mph in 3rd gear but this is not as pronounced in 4th and even less - although still noticable - in 5th. There is also no body shake or judder when decelerarting at these speeds. I have a feeling that it is somehow engine/gearbox related rather than suspension but as I don't know much about the behavior of this model I would like some pointers on where to start looking for the problem.

lower engine mount, top engine mounts? all the mounts are turned to jelly quite quick with the HDis the lower one is the usual suspect, jack up the car and have a squint underneath at the weekend and i bet its shot, just try a search on here for lower engine mount and all will be revealed.

Engine mount (especially the rear lower one) and also possibly gearbox mount although this one will also make shifting tricky.
One remote possibility is the differential bearings - shakes under acceleration, goes away when lifting off.
Worn mountings will transmit vibrations (of which a HDi has many) through the chassis when loaded up.

(1)is this the OE part number for the lower rear mount "PEUGEOT : 1809.16, PEUGEOT : 1809.21"
(2) where exactly are the differential bearings and how much of a job is it to change them?

Worn diff bearings is worrying me. My 2.1 wobbles a fair bit when driving, i though it was tracking or bushes but they checked out fine.
Any way of testing the diff short of ripping it apart?

The diff bearings are part of the gearbox, I don't expect this to be the problem that's why I called it a 'remote' possibility.
When diff bearings go you'll get a vibration as soon as you accelerate and load-up the transmission it's very rare but can be caused if the vehicle has struck something very strongly and sent a shock through the gearbox.
For the engine mount, they're quite cheap enough from the dealer (£15.00 max) but fitting is a pig as it forms part of the O/S drive shaft which means the gearbox has to be drained and the mount removed/new bush pressed in on a bench etc....
Here's a knackered one....

And a new one in place that bit above, to the right is the drive shaft...

You need to check all these things before you go getting work done, have a search around here for similar stories etc. on here members can only surmise what these problems could be by reading what is reported.

AGES ago on here a lady joined up desperate for help as she had a wobble when accelerating after *loads* of trips to various tyre shops and countless balancing/swapping wheels I asked my mechanic what he thought and he immediately said "diff bearings" the problem being that the drive line rotates eccentrically or out of balance which is then exaggerated when loaded up.StevieboyTD wrote:Worn diff bearings is worrying me. ....we never did hear back from the lady but I imagine she sold the car on

Mine wobbles as soon as i pull away, seems to level out on "wobbleness" around 35-40mph. Gets worse when i'm on the gas, smooths out when i'm coasting.
Changed the top engine mounts and gearbox mount, only one left to do the the lower, doesn't actually seem to be failed though, no splits or perish visible.

Worn out inner cv joints could cause symptoms like that...

Here's hoping!
Got a friend who has just trashed his Pug Pertner HDI van, might see if the part numbers match up on servicebox and get myself some lower mileage driveshafts. (heh, mines on 440k, ANYTHING is lower mileage!)

New driveshaft fitted and juddering gone - now for the vibration at motorway cruising speed 
Edit: forgot to mention it started knocking on hard cornering yesterday, the inner joint must have been about to come apart completely
