i have a 51 plate 2ltr hdi with 81600 on the clock and its due for a timing belt change . i,ve been quoted £450+ for the belt kit tensioners and water pump plus labour but do i really need to change the water pump etc
haven't had them done on previous cars and didn't have it done on the wife's 306 dl

Yes get the water pump changed.

That is seriously over priced though.

I supplied the parts and peugeot charged me £170 labour. Parts cost about £80 I think

That price does sound a bit steep. i had my cambelt, tensioners, waterpump and coolant changed. £90 parts and £190 labour. Might be worth getting a few more quotes. Buying your own parts always works out cheaper.

After months of hesitation, I've just changed my timing belt for the first time and it was dead easy thanks to EvilTwin's excellent Knowledge Base article. I wasn't going to renew the water pump as it was only changed at the last belt change 65K ago. But after taking off the covers and seeing the tell-tale signs of a long-term weep, I couldn't not change it, especially as it was only £22. When added to the Dayco belt, INA tensioners and 3l of antifreeze, the whole lot cost just over £90 from my local motor factors. And it only took a day. Chuffed? You bet!

Est quote i had was by an independant peugeot/citroen specialist based on £140 for parts, £250 labour plus vat on top ....thought it was steep at the time and was going to ask my local garage to do the job with me getting the parts .
My next question is should i use original peugeot parts on just get them from my local motor factors

having come across this old post i put on quiet a while ago, i thought i would update it

i had the belt kit and new water pump fitted. I had only done around 10,000 mile when on my way to work on the motorway my car made a sudden noise , i immediately dipped the clutch ( should have swithced the engine off but ... ) and coasted a few hundred yards to the nearest layby.......on inspecting the engine i saw water coming from water pump area and also notice my timing belt casing had worn ( expected worse case scenario was the belt had snappped and engine was f*cked ). thanks to the rac, i got home to my local garage and we found the water pump bearing had collapsed this forced the timing belt against the casing but by some grace of god the timing belt stayed intact only 1 tooth had broken

a new belt etc was fitted , timing checked and a compression test ..........yes i was vvvvlucky indeed

make me think should i have splashed the cash on original pug parts.
