Hi there!

The 1.8 engine is pretty much bullet-proof. 142,000 miles isn't too much for these engines - just as long as the timing belt has been changed (if you don't know the timing belt history, then budget for a new timing belt, tensioner kit, water pump, and aux belt).

The belt change interval is 80,000 miles (128,700 km) or 8 years, whichever comes first.

You may well find the 1.8 petrol engine a bit under-powered, but you can mod them a bit for a little extra grunt - an ECU remap and a stainless steel exhaust will help a bit, and you can also add a performance air filter.
2002 (D9) Peugeot 406 Coupe SE, 2.2 litre Petrol. Scarlet Red/Rouge Ecarlate/Rosso Scarlatto. Black Leather interior. SOLD :(
2008 (E60 LCI) BMW 525i M-Sport, 3.0 litre Petrol. Carbonschwarz Metallic. Black Dakota Leather and Myrtlewood interior.
