Lower Engine mount HDI

Some time ago (April) I submitted a post saying I would replace the dreaded lower mount with a 2 piece poly bush one. Can confirm I have today done this with one I purchased off ebay for 23 quid. Really believe going down this route is worthwhile and did it by busting out the old bush ( what was left of it !) and cutting through the outer ring in 2 places ( one right through, the other nearly ) with a reversed blade in the trusty hacksaw . Whole thing took 40 minutes and saves all the driveshaft removal hassle with associated possible seal damage etc and gearbox oil draining. Have read on the 306 forum that this type of poly bush does fail but appears to be in harsh competition use. Can report the car drives 100% better with no juddering on pulling away etc. A small slightly noticeable vibration on tickover is the only trade off. If the bush does fail then an easy job to take it out and press in a genuine mount using the home made 2 metal plates method, as has been described elsewhere in this forum .... All in all pleased with the outcome.

Hi
I remember seeing your post about the two piece mount a while ago. Glad you got it sorted. I did mine 2 weeks ago usuing the normal engine mount and it took a lot longer than 40mins. Had all the hassle with getting the driveshaft out because the bearing had seized then had to wait a few days for the part from peugeot. Took a while to press the bearing and metal bush onto the driveshaft. Pressing the mount in wasn't too hard but i have to say your way of doing it sounds a better option maybe i'll do it next time. Hopefully the one i've fitted will last a couple of years anyway.

thanks marco, seized bearings do seem a common problem , one of the reasons I did mine the other way , such a bad design really shame peugeot didnt mount the bracket slightly higher up the back of the engine save all the hassle !!

Hi

I couldn't believe how involved this Job was. I can see why a garage would charge a couple of hours labour for doing it. But its certainly not beyond most people who can use a set of spanners. The most fiddly bit was getting the 2 x 11mm nuts that hold the bearing in the casing undone. i ended up taking the turbo pipe off. A set of those ratchet spanners that turn would have been handy. I had to use a drift to tap the bush/ driveshaft out as it would come out. If my bearing had been okay i could have just undone them and turned them through 90 degrees. I really gave everything a good clean up made sure there was a good bit of grease on the bearing inner and outer races just in case the driveshaft has to come out again. Also cleaned those 11mm bolts and put copaslip on the threads. The car does seem a lot smoother now. I'm also thinking about doing the gearbox mount and the top mount as well as they aren't that dear to replace. I had a good look at the flexijoint as well while i was there and it looks okay. Theres still a bit of movement when you blip the accelerator but its not moving loads like before. Like you said its not the best design is it judging by the amount of people who come on here with knackered engine mounts. The one i bought was a slightly different design to the one that came out time will tell if its any better.

I've had a Powerflex Engine mount poly bush (for the 306) sat on my desk for a few weeks now. Couldn't decide wether to fit it or not, but reading your thread has decided it for me. I've got an oil and filter change to do so i'll stick it on then. Kev

Hi, well i finally got round to doing the oil change i've been threatening to do. Along with that i'd bought a Powerflex Lower Engine mount bush and after reading kev1839's post decided to do it. I have no idea how you managed to change it in 40 minutes ?? Mine was a complete b*&%$"d !
