Hi All,
Amazingly, just after a visit to a mechanic to replace an inner track rod, an oil leak has developed. It comes from the rear side of the engine. A fair quantity of oil. There is a pipe from the turbo exhaust section that leads to a open pot type of device. I am guessing this is the waste-gate? Do these spray/leak as it does seem oilly beneath it.
By the next morning, the car will have a stain under it of about 5-10cm across.
Any advice would be appreciated...

I would take a guess at turbo oil seals leaking and passing oil through, this then would be blown out when the waste gate opens on over run etc, now bare in mind i am purely guessing, is there an increase in smoke from the engine when the turbo is boosting? are you using much oil? also age of car and mileage might help those who actually know something to help you with some suggestions.

oh and is engine oil or gear oil under the car in the morning? you can usually tell from the smell, i would say taste but i try to keep my habit of tasting oils a secret as somebody will soon be on telling me its bad for me

KKKs seem to be good at leaking a bit of oil, mine does but is otherwise fine (touch wood) and I can't be asked to cough up a couple of hundred quid to have it rebuilt when there's damn all else wrong with it

It is normal for the KKK to be caked in oil but it shouldn't be dripping on the road underneath. If your mechanic has caused this then I guess he's disturbed the turbo-oil feed/return lines so take it back to him!

Thanks to all so far. She has done 176,000 miles and last time I used 0-40w oil but about 1500miles ago the change went to 0-30w in search of even greater fuel economy. I do try to avoid spinning up the turbo and she does not seem to be loosing masses of oil. However there does seem to be a fair amount dripping down. I will continue to monitor...

0-30w
that will find all the leaks no problem, that is a seriously thin oil for an older 406, its a fully synth too so that will clean away old deposits that might have been keeping some of the smaller leaks clogged up and sealed.

Even if you had a brand new engine with brand new oil seals everywhere the minimum recomended would be 5w-40 Fully Synthetic!
Using 0w-30 will mean you will now spend the rest of time chasing oil leaks

Get some Forte seal conditioner and some 10w-40 semi synthetic and see if that stops the leak over time.

agreed my brand new 2.2 biturbo HDi (its in a C5 though)has 5-30w fully synth so 0-30 must be like water, change back and see if it slows or stops the leaks, i think you may have washed away a few deposits now though, i just hope they dont block anything else up as they float round the system

My Old mans T5 uses 0w-30 and your right, it's very very thin when cold. Even compared to my 5w30 that I use in the Focus!
