Early HDi - non dual mass???????

Noticed a noise on the car yesterday - not very loud, but discernable at slow speeds
Again noticed it today, and when idling, it wasn't really present, but definately there when pressing clutch, and in gear
My first reaction was thrust bearing
I went round to my mechanic friend and he said it could be the dual mass
I said, sod it, i'll scrap it, as it's not worth £400 in parts then another £200 odd to fix
He said Peugeot for parts as they were cheaper than anywhere else
He then rang his mate who works in the parts department at the local dealership
He came off phone and said £95+vat, should be £159, but he'll do 40% discount
I said what about flywheel?
He said, it's solid!
What I said?
He replies, the HDi didn't have a Dual Mass Flywheel in them till 2001
I'm a little unconvinced, and if I can get away with it - i'm still at work! - i'm now going to look on SB for confirmation

Right, been on SB
Firstly I inputted a D9 406 and it showed the Flywheel as a Dual Mass, part number 532L0 at £410.11 + vat = 492.13
I then went back in and used my vin, and it showed a different flywheel, part number 532H1 at £272.39 + vat + £326.87
Clutch kit is 2050V3 - £235.52 + vat = £282.62
Comprosing of parts: plate 2055AV £166.18 + vat = £199.42; cover 2004X1 £121.29 + vat = £145.55; and, Bearing 204166 £56.77 + vat = £68.12

Just seen this press release
HDi (High Pressure, direct injection diesel)
In Turbo Diesel form, the first generation HDi DW10 ATED direct injection Common Rail engine appeared on the 406 in the autumn and has returned on the new 406 with a new feature designed to perfect the acoustic and vibratory comfort. It has a double flywheel with damper which allows smooth running even at very low speeds (down to around 1000 rpm) while retaining the progressive acceleration of the HDi engine.
It confirms officially the HDi engine was available in the D8, but that there must be a couple of types of dual mass, as the latter part of the quote says "double flywheel with damper"
There must be a progreesion of this which sounds like it came in in 2001 and be the more expensive part I found listed in first post

Actually, re-reading that agin, it might mean the dual mass was a d9 thing and not D8, what do you reckon?

My mate is a little busy, but he's just rang up and he has someone lined up who will do the clutch for £150
So £150 labour, £114 for the clutch, then some gearbox oil, so maybe £280
I still can't make my mind up whether i'm better breaking it
I mean, I paid £130 for the leather and it's still excellent, plus with the wiring conversion I reckon it's worth £200
I only just spent £155 on tyres, so you hope the wheels are worth £250
Engine with remapped ECU £300???
Powerflow exhaust £125?
That's £875 before all the other bits
Can't be far off what the car is worth
Plus the metal value of the car
Car is definately worth a lot more in bits
Do I just look for a later 406 and strip the goodies off mine and sell the bits left over??

I know I might sound a bit excessive, as it's only a clutch and it's a wear and tear item
but
I know it's going to need all the ARB bushes doing down the line
When I changed the fuel filter, there was a few bits of metal in there - pump "might" be on it's way out
As much as I love my 406, I gotta be pragmatic and remember it's a 12 year old car, and is now the time to walk away?

Ah well, looks like the plodmobile lives on
If it had been dual mass, i'd of scrapped it for sure
Was struggling to make my mind up, hence was hoping for advice from you guys, and misses wasn't any help either
Got to accept that a clutch is a consumable item, that you have to live with
It's not like I ain't had my use out of it is it
Did suggest doing the bottom mount whilst doing the clutch, but money is tight already without this expense, so looks like i'm chancing my luck with not doing it
If i'd been flush, i'd of replaced both mounts that side regardless, but as it is, it's over a week's wages for me anyway

I deliberately kept quiet as I didn't want to influence you the wrong way, but I will say this - now you've paid out on the clutch you're probably stuck with it for at least another year otherwise it'd be money down the drain getting it done.
If I remember later, I'll put my VIN in Servicebox to see if I'm dual mass or not as my car is a late 2000.

How do you get Servicebox to give you the right part for the VIN? I put in my VIN & ended up with a choice of 2 still:
532LO Dual Flywheel - £492.13 inc VAT
532K1 Flywheel new - £315.94 inc VAT
When I put in my VIN it gives my vehicle in the blue bar at the top, but I still have to choose 406 RESTYLING from below to go any further.

That had never happened to me before, until I was looking again this afternoon
I logged back out, and back in again, and it worked properly
Might have just been a blip

The misses has a couple of quid put by, and I was trying to influence her to offer to buy another car, but she didn't take the hint
I was hoping she was going to buy a car for us, but the new bathroom cost us a bomb, then we had the bedroom done as well
Plan is to get the clutch done, save up some money whilst running till about January then get rid
I still think it's the wrong decision, but short of forcing the misses to lend me the money, I was stumped

Well what would you get instead if you scrapped it?
Would you just be buying a load of problems that you don't know about?

I've long wanted a 2003 406
There was always the idea of utilising parts from mine
i.e strut brace
if it was a executive then i'd use my 17" alloys, but if it was a se i'd keep the nimrods
again if it was an executive i'd take the black ash trim out of mine etc
Problem is, i'm getting forever mindful of the amount of money going into the 406 compared to its potential value, which at one time didn't bother me too much, but it's starting to
It's like Lozz spending money sorting his gearbox and clutch out and then getting not much more for it than those repairs cost
i.e in hindsight he shouldn't of spent the dosh and just got rid of the car

But i spotted the other day on Euro car parts,i can get the whloe solid flywheel & clutch kit for £155 +vat.

But that is where my logic of keeping it comes in - the older they get, the less money they depreciate & at least if you keep it for a while after an expensive repair you get some of your money's worth.
If you get rid within a couple of weeks, then you lose all that money straight away.

Just tried it again. Bad news - mine is the dual flywheel. Looks like I'm set for another £1000 to spend when the clutch goes.
