Battery Charge Fault

Ive asked this in the electrical section but posted it on a historic thread, but thought a new post was needed to help me.

My V reg 406 2.0 HDi has a fault thats become apparent over the last few days that when ever the revs drop below 1000 the battery light comes on and a error message is displayed saying battery charge fault aswell as a lovely high pitch beep.

Later tonight Im gonna grab the multi meter and check the voltage across the engine to see whats happening, but has anyone experinced this problem before?

Also Im not sure if its related to this or coincidence but my drivers side dipped bulb has gone aswell since this beeping and error light/message showed itself.

I can only think it's a fault with the regulator within the alternator if it's not charging at idle.

The sidelight could be coincidence but it could mean the regulator is also shoving lots of volts into the system (hurry up with that multimeter!)

Got my friends multi meter out and from the alternator and across the battery only 12volts when the car idles and revs stay below 1000, then rev the engine and 14volts appear!

Is it new alternator time then?

I think so, it's a pity you can't just replace the regulator!

It should still be charging, (i.e. > 13 V.), at tickover, possibly a little less, if you've loads of stuff turned on.

with the old alternator in the voltage would drop to 12volts now with the new one in it does 13 - 14 volts
