Hi guys, just bought an old 406 2.1td for my wife as a second car but have seen that the Lucas EPIC injector pump that is fitted to this model is very unreliable, what are yours thoughts and experiences on it?

Hi & welcome to the site.
Don't personally know anything about the 2.1 / epic, but opinions seem to be fairly evenly split between owners of high mileage trouble-free cars and those that hate / remove them. The latter camp often do so to allow it to run on veg oil.

as doggy said if its running okay leave it alone my 2.1 has done over 175000 on the lucus pump no proplems.
if you change it for a bosch you need pump, pipes and the injectores

They are reliable, just as reliable as the Bosch equivalent. They ain't as strong though. As soon as you start messing with them you will run into problems. They also won't run veg oil etc where the bosch will.
If your only planning on running it on Diesel then put 250ml of Two stroke oil in with every tank of diesel

Thanks for the welcome! It's just it occasionally hiccups while idling, and can be hesitant when accellerating up through the rev range (over 3000k revs) every so often.
The car has 106k miles on the clock and has an immaculate service record.

Change the fuel filter, air filter and give the car an oil change (Change the oil every 4,000 to 6,000 miles depending on your driving style. I.e. motorway miles 6,000mile intervals. If you been doing lots of stop/start and or driving it hard then 4,000 mile intervals). It costs less then £20 to do an oil change with cheap 10w40 semi synth oil, decent filter and a sump washer.
Try some two stroke in with the diesel as this lubricates the pump, injectors and allows the diesel to clean burner in the cylinders. Improves smoothness, throttle response and pickup aswell has having a little less smoke out the back end

250-300ml per tank full used to work wonders in my 1.9! Was like a totally different engine!

Is that worth doing on an HDi Sam or is it more for the older TD engines?

I'l be doing it to my HDi when I get one

Ecspecially considering how much High Pressure pumps and injectors are if they go wrong
People also do it to stop the DPF's clogging up too!
You can also expect 3-5% more economy.
Sticking two stroke in with diesel is a big thing among the diesels in america!
