1.9 TD estate exhaust without cat on 2.1 TD Estate?

Hi everyone,
The 406 went in for the MOT today, and well, it didn't fare too well!
Reason(s) for refusal to issue Certificate
Nearside Front position lamp(s) not working (1.1.A.2b)
Nearside Headlamp aim too high (1.8 )
Offside Stop lamp not working (1.2.1b )
Front Exhaust has part of the system excessively deteriorated (7.1.1a)
Exhaust emits an excessive level of metered smoke for a turbo charged engine (7.4.B.2b)
Front Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2a)
Rear Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2a)
Parking brake efficiency below requirements (3.7.A.10)
Advisory Notice issued
Nearside Rear Brake pad(s) wearing thin (3.5.1f)
Windscreen has damage to an area less than a 10mm circle within zone 'A' (8.3.1a)
Nearside Inner Rear Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)
Offside Inner Rear Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)
Offside Front Anti-roll bar linkage has slight play in a ball joint (2.4.G.3)
Nearside Front constant velocity joint gaiter deteriorated (2.5.C.1a)
Rear Exhaust has part of the system slightly deteriorated (7.1.1a)
Annnnyway, I was wondering if the non-cat 1.9 TD exhaust pipe would be a straight fit onto the 2.1? I ask because it's cheaper, and would remove the useless cat anyway!

The 2.1 has a different positioned downpipe I believe.
Go to an exhaust shop and get them to do a comeplete straight section from downpipe to rear box. Shouldn't cost more than £50.
Exhaust gasses, well turn the turbo up, fueling down and advance the fueling a little. And chuck a load of veg oil in. Veg oil burns grey instead of black ;)

dont think thats a bad fail to be honest
a couple of bulbs abit of fiddling and 80 % of its done.
dont know about exhaust but would you get away without a cat?
handbrake should adjust up
change air/fuel filter then fill the fuel filter housing up with some injector cleaner.
think it runs on veg anyway

Diesels don't need a CAT, they are tested on Smoke density not Co2
I belive the law is changing to "You must have one even if you pass emmisions" so I'm going to get an empty CAT and place it over a straight bit of pipe

Yeah it's already running on veg oil, but it still failed! I think the pump is wound up a bit too much though so I'll drop it down a bit.
It did look like the downpipe was different, but I thought it was worth a try anyway! You can get a 2.1 non cat solution, but the only place that sells it says "call for prices" so I'm not sure if you can get it or not:

when the cat broke on mine i asked about loosing it but was told they'd tried it once but couldn't get it to run right.
Unless you do what calamity james did and replace the pump with a bosch

Theres no sensors or anything for the car to tell weather or not theres a CAT there?

backpressure? tell you what, if i pm you the mechanic's phone number you can ask hjm what he thinks. he doesn't speak any english though

Diesels don't rely on back pressure, ecspeically turbo diesels. They hate in infact! Sounds like he was feeding you a line :p

this is my mate's workshop where i get parts at cost & for the last few jobs, free labour, so i don't think so. But hey, maybe there was something else wrong with it, who knows?

I'll try and get hold of this non cat pipe for the 2.1, I'd rather not have a cat anyway, might eek a few more bhp/nm from the engine and seeing as the ECU doesn't go anywhere near controlling the engine now hopefully I should avoid any problems
