Crankshaft pulley

Hi all i need some help urgently load ticking coming from right bottom side of engine had car on axle standsand taken wheel arch cover off and it sounds like crankshaft pull to me but id like to know if i take the auxillary drive belt off and run the engine will it do any harm?,also will it clarify if ticking noise stops it is crankshaft pulley and needs to be changed any advise really needed asap many thanks

hi
its a well known fact that the bottom pully can break up.if you think this is the case get it replaced asap as if it breaks the belt can jam and wreck the engine.

Nope wont do any harm at all, water, oil and fuel pumps are all cam belt driven, just changed my crank pulley for the same reason, £35 ish for the pulley, 5 minute job :cheesy:

on a side note, dont try and run it with the pulley off (not that i think you would) :lol: as for the diagnostic, maybe as there would be less tension on the pulley, but this is normally done to see if there's wear in the tensioner or the idler bearings.
Look at the crank pulley if theres a fine black/ brown/ silver film of dust then this indicates wear....... you should also be able to see the pulley centre not quite moving the same as the outer when the car is running with the belt attached :wink:

Thankyou for the tips guys its put my mind at rest i will post how it goes as soon as but being bank holiday every where shut will keep post and thanks to all that posted,
